Episode Seventy-Four – kind of.

Hucklebug, Episode 74:  Due to some bizarre and unforeseen technical problems, much of this week’s episode has been lost.  Here is the only remaining fragment, which is our discussion of CD Mix alternate tracks 6-10.

I’d totally forgotten about “Don’t Let’s Start”—haven’t heard or thought of that song for years. I suspect I have it around here on tape somewhere.

And I agree with Betster on the Golden Girls. I would be closest to the Bea Arthur character, and I just find that depressing.

A lot of my “goodbye” and “sad songs” were the same, some of which were used in previous mixes—“Don’t Go” by Matthew Sweet and “Some Fantastic Place” by Squeeze. And someone did use Tears in Heaven, which does choke me up, too.

Well, you’re both right on the diamonds—it’s used for 60 and 75. Platinum is 70. I guess they figure that if you make it to 75, you get more diamonds again. It’s the least anyone can do.

Even in this truncated episode, Bet has the best addictive laugh I’ve heard in quite some time. What tickles me about Stennie is how she knows how to tickle Bet’s funny bone, then sits back and has that understated chuckle as Bet wails about in laughter.

Hey you two, discuss what tracks you enjoyed from the others you’ve received.

If Don’t Let’s Start had made it to one of the CD mixes, I likely would have crashed right into a brick wall to get it to stop.

This surprised me: nobody used R-E-S-P-E-C-T, did they?  Way too obvious?  Thankfully we didn’t hear M-E-T-H-O-D O-F (Modern) L-O-V-E.

I had a sad song choice called Everyone Else Is Evolving by Chappaquiddick Skyline, which has a real winner of an opening line: “I hate my life.”  If you ever do depressing songs, I’ll be ready.

  4. Duke says:

I had a great song for #8 called “I Set All My Friends on Fire” by Aiden. Nothing says goodbye like a splash of gasoline and a match.

I’ll use it in another mix. It’s too good to waste.

  5. I never realized how much the HB is like youth and good health and bladder control—you don’t fully appreciate it until it’s gone.

    So, my alternate tracks:

    6. Before I settled on “Posh!” (which was a very 11th-hour epiphany) I was all set to use M-O-N-E-Y by Lyle Lovett. A very serviceable spelling song, but not nearly as fun or interesting or rich in nostalgia as “Posh!” The other nice thing about “Posh!” was that it enabled me to meet the unspoken, de facto requirement for at least one show tune.

    7. New in ‘07
I was so psyched to get this on a mix, it would have been an amnesty song if it weren’t for this category. Given the influences I hear, I thought it would be right in Stennie’s (and any Finn Bros./Billy Joel fan’s) wheelhouse.

    8. Goodbye Song: “Long Road,” Patty Griffin
No alternates, at least when I was doing the mix. Now, though, I wish that I had gone a different direction, if only for variety’s sake. I think Rosemary Clooney’s version of “Adios” would have done nicely.

    9. Song about home: Pete Townshend, “White City Fighting”
I thought about John Denver’s “Back Home Again” which was just way too “on the nose” as Stennie put it, and the Finn Brother’s “Disembodied Voices” which, though awesome, wasn’t quite homey enough.

Ultimately, I like the perverse kick from the idea of a song about home that was the complete opposite of nostalgic and sentimental.

    10. Sad song: “Johnson’s Love,” Dwight Yoakam
Also considered Nanci Griffith’s “Gulf Coast Highway” and the Mary-Chapin Carpenter song that somebody (Duke?) used.

  6. Sal says:

Hey Stennie, you gonna tell everyone our little secret or do I have to?

  7. ThePete says:

I’m with Bet and LilyG—I didn’t like Golden Girls either—same reason as Bet, too.  HATED that show… so BORING.

    I don’t like one-eyed kittens.  They’re just too sad.

I like Sal’s idea of you guys talking about other folks’ CD mix X-change tracks smile

I’m with Mike on the “RESPECT” being the most obvious “spell-out” song.  I’ve never even heard of the ones you guys chose 🙁

Missed the full show this week!  I hope you have better luck next time.

Random topic suggestion: garlic salt – what’s your take?  I use it on almost everything I cook.  What about you?

Random show suggestion: Pulling for Ya’s – like Fuck Offs and You Rules, only this one is like a cheer for someone who is trying to succeed at something or struggling with some obstacle they’re trying to get past.  My Pulling for Ya this week would be the folks down in San Diego dealing with the huge wild fires.  The folks in Malibu are in trouble too, but they’re all rich white folks with insurance.  Still, to anyone who is fighting to keep their home, ThePete is Pulling for Ya!

  8. Sal says:

    THE PEEEETEEEE!!!

  9. ThePete says:

    Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllll!
