I had a thought on how you should start the no swearing show—run the George Carlin “Seven Dirty Words” clip, and then not say any of them.
What? BBC America is going to show Dancing with the Stars? Argh. That sounds like an ITV show and not a BBC show anyway.
Christmas special—Year Without A Santa Claus. Heat Miser and Snow Miser rule!
Re: actually reading my comment to Carol of the Bells. Oh I see, matching my smart-assery with smart-assery of your own. Well played.
Re: glossary. Luckily I’m proficient in Python, and I just recently watched The In-Laws. You will confound me with any Eddie Izzard material though, so I probably need to catch up. Also, I guess I need to revisit Grizzly Man amongst the holiday merriment. Think my in-laws’ll mind? I mean, who doesn’t love Herzog after a big meal?
Re: Auntie Mame. Rosalind Russell is fantastic and I had forgotten I shared her nephew’s name. Spot-on impression too. If you get bored of saying that, you could always play an Irish jig on kazoo.
…SEGUE (sans fancy editing software)….
Speaking of kazoos, Stennie needs to get hers in time for National Kazoo Day on Jan. 28, 2008. Here’s the link.
Re: Favorite Xmas TV moments. A couple of quickies.
1. Merry Christmas, Dammit – The SNL/Gumby sketch featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Gary Kroeger as Donny and Marie Osmond making out while singing “Blue Christmas” as well as the Don King family singers. Sinatra (Joe Piscopo) singing Silent Night is fantastic.
2. The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t But Then Was – the all-day movie that the Simpsons kids are made to watch during a snowstorm. It’s a wonderful poke at all Christmas TV programming – “Oh no, Xmas is going to be ruined. …BUT WAIT!”
3. OK, conventional pick: Charlie Brown Xmas, the dancing scene. My son loves to watch it on YouTube set to Outkast’s “Hey Ya”.
4. The goddamned Yule Log. Programming at its finest.
Ah, 1981. It was a very good year. First albums by the Plimsouls, the dB’s, Tom Tom Club. East Side Story, Trust, Almost Blue, the second Pretenders album, Give The People What They Want, Damaged, Dare!. But 1982 was even better, so I’ll bore everybody with another list next time.
What’s great about A Matter Of Life And Death is that the scenes on Earth are in color, while heaven is shown in b&w. Anybody else would have reversed it. There’s a term for this kind of film you like, those dealing with life here and what lies in the great beyond (a perfect example being It’s A Wonderful Life), film blanc. I’ve heard Groundhog Day described in such terms, too. Other examples: Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Heaven Can Wait, Damn Yankees, The Horn Blows At Midnight.
Favorite Christmas movie: Fanny And Alexander! Seriously, it’s wonderful, and don’t let the 5 hour run time scare you away. Anyway, it’s split up like a mini-series, so you can watch the 75 minute portions across a few nights. And then top it off with the 3 hour version.
Now let me tell you some more about Trilogy Of Terror…
While I’m still here allow me to pimp my current holiday CD mix, now available for your downloading pleasure:
Part 1 (tracks 1-13)
Part 2 (tracks 14-25, plus a cover)
You’ll want to grab both files, unless you like leaving things half finished.
Enjoy the holiday of your choice!
If the 3 Stooges are a guy thing, I must be a woman because I don’t get the 3 Stooges. I’m fine with being a woman. I don’t know if my wife would be happy with it, but I don’t mind.
I like Carol of the Bells because it’s very dramatic—it sounds like there’s a lot going on. I hate all of the lyrics because they’re all about Christmas. To me it sounds like music to go with an chase sequence in a movie—next time you’re forced to hear it, imagine a young deer being hunted in the woods by evil hunters and as the song ends, the poor creature lies bleeding in the snow.
I love your rendition of Patrick’s comment, Stennie—yet ANOTHER set of lyrics for that damn song!!
I don’t know if you guys saw the all fuck version of the Departed, but I thought of it when you guys were talking about a swearing outtake reel. Check out the Departed “short version” here:

Paul Giamati is bloody brilliant and “American Splendor” is a great movie—I agree, Bet.
Did you see “Throne of Blood”, Bet? I know you’re a Kurosawa/Mifune fan and I was curious what you thought of it. In some ways I enjoyed it quite a bit, in others not so much.
Have you guys watched the documentary “Wal*Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices”? The family that owns Wal*Mart has a nuke-proof bunker.
I can’t go in that store any more. O_O
In “Nightmare Before Christmas” I never understood why Santa wasn’t killed.
I think Bet will slip up and swear by accident—she won’t even notice.
Charlie Browns are my favorite specials for every time of the year. Charlie gets shit on but still manages to have a good time (the sad sap), so it’s very realistic to me.
I adore “A Christmas Story”. Sorry, Bet!
“NOT A FINGA!”
I am not going to mention the Star Wars Holiday Special.
DAMN!
I didn’t think it was a bad show—not the best, but far from the worst!
Sorry I’m so behind—things got hectic with the holidays (trip up to NoCal), I got involved with the OLPC community heavily and then on New Years Eve, just in time for a party (we were literally on the way to dinner which immediately preceded the party) I came down with a cold that had me dead for about a week.
So I’m catchin’ up now!!
And I listed to the end, but Bet doesn’t have to send me gelt (sp?) as it’s bad for me. 🙁
