Hucklebug, Episode 105: RIP’s, shout-outs, movies (Bet: The Bride Came C.O.D., Across the Universe, Monsters, Inc.; Stennie: I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With, Key Largo), the return of lowlights and highlights, fuck-offs and you-rules, and a big pile of topics that Mike left us in the comments of episode 99.
Note: no show next week. Also, please enjoy the new logo, courtesy of Patrick! Thanks, Patrick!
Across The Universe was a big steaming bowl of what?
Oh my GOD!!!!
I respect your opinion Bet but I really think you missed this movie completely. I could not say anything better about this movie than what this man has to say: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070913/REVIEWS/709130301
Logos: Sure, share em, use em. They’re yours. Bill’s in the mail.
(Just kidding. Actually I wish I had had a bit more time. Maybe I’ll work on a slightly different design for a tee-shirt, if you want.) I’ve listened guiltily to too many NPR pledge drives to not know the drill. If you enjoy something, you should support it.
English football: A Crystal Palace fan? Wow, unusual! I’m one of those Americans that follow Arsenal simply because they’re one of four teams that ever get coverage that makes it overseas. It’s difficult to follow a team that’s in a whole separate continent sometimes.
Across the Universe – hooray! Can I borrow your quote about it being a Jethro-bowl full of sh*t (or for more delicate readers, s***)? I’ve had several people (including big-time Beatles fans) tell me that it’s worth a look. I guess every generation needs its own film version of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Stennie, really, if you could just own up to your Red Buttons obsession, it would be more than helpful. Also, how is the SS Poseidon these days?
(Cut-n-paste comments rule!)
All I meant about the old Doctor Who series is that the doctor was the most asexual being ever—he would travel for year with some very hot young thing (of both genders) and absolutely nothing untoward ever went on, nor did you think it did. It was a kids show. Now Tennant’s longing after all kinds of people—Sarah Jane Smith (although he didn’t do a thing when she was there), Rose, and who knows who else. Some things should just remain innocent forever.
And for the record, I did not actually experience the pain of childbirth. I skipped that part and went right into the operating room on schedule. Now a totally different odd thing that I won’t forget is the experience of having abdominal surgery while I was awake, but that’s a different rant. I don’t know who these people are that well up with emotion and grab at the babies when they’re born and are filled with this instant longing—I was like “that’s nice. It’s a baby. I’m sure he’ll still be here when I get up. Will someone PLEASE put me out now and get this elephant off my chest?”
I’m not sure how much I like this primary being hawked as a breakthrough. It seems to be setting us up to be sexist or racist depending on which candidate one supports.
Janeane Garofalo isn’t funny anymore. Not sure if she was, but she’s so bitter now that she’s downright unpleasant. Sarah Silverman is just warped, and watching her do shock comedy isn’t funny.
Brilliant but canceled—agree with It’s Like, You Know. But you forgot about Sports Night. Another one I liked was something called Moon Over Miami. Had Bill (or “Billy”) Campbell in it. Sigh. It was directed by Allan Arkush. Not sure what his middle initial is.
Oh, and another thing. I just read the Ebert review from Sal, and I can at least agree with one thing he says: Watch the DVD of A Hard Day’s Night. Sage advice, Mr. Ebert. I’ll take you up on it.
Sorry, Sal, no offense. I haven’t even seen the film, but I can’t see why I would.
Across the Universe? I haven’t seen it although it’s sitting beside my DVD player. Does anyone else like to “Age” dvds a little before you watch them? Like wine, I think they benefit with proper fermentation. You have to remember to rotate them once every 6 months or so.
Here’s a question for all the HBer’s out there. How many movies do you have laying around unwatched? I probably have about 20. Don’t count those you never intended to watch though.
Doctor Who was a Time Lord and not human. Apparently sex wasn’t a thing they did. At least he was never interested in it. Maybe they multiplied by dividing like bacteria.
I’ve got Across The Universe next in line in the Netflix queueueueue, so next weekend I should know how crazy Bet is. Actually, I already know how crazy Bet is, so this won’t do much.
RIP Cyd Charisse, who allowed us mega-straight guys to enjoy MGM musicals, too. Your grace, talent, and legs will be much missed.

Another quick round of “Either A or B”:
Which band would you rather have been in…
B-52s or Devo?
Talking Heads or Split Enz?
ABBA or Queen?
I have seen Bet’s photo on her site. This is the woman I remember from the lab! Are you sure you didn’t work at the lab? I don’t comprehend the humor in denying this. My question was legitimate.
Wow, I thought ACROSS THE UNIVERSE was phenomenal and I am not a Beatles fan. The film was gorgeous and vibrant and I could not get enough.
I have not listened to shows 71 through 99. Which show is the one I must listen to? If they gave awards for podcasts, which show would be your submission? I’m assuming it’s not one of the episodes where Heidi was going through her blackface phase.
LUST, CAUTION was certainly worth it for the main sex scene. I’d die a happy woman if they could have Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Darius Danesh in a film with endless scenes of frontal nudity.
Heidi, you might want to track down KID MILLIONS. It’s a truly funny film that made me appreciate Eddie Cantor’s talent.
P.S. Is there a podcast where you explain the history of your friendship and the creation of Hucklebug?
My favorite Starbucks drink: Iced decaf Americano.
Love the Magic Eraser – great when we moved – stuff I had no idea I could clean! My house looked so much better when we left than when we lived in it!!
Everytime Kevin mentions our neighbor Mike, my head thinks “the blogless, you magnificent bastard, you own YouTube.”
Thanks for my You Rule!
It is hard to recycle in our new town – we had lots of boxes and stuff from moving here – and the town recycle bins were taken away because too many people were putting their trash in it. That’s really a shame!
Loved Mr. Middlebrow’s imitation of Job – I so miss Arrested Development!
I do love Monster’s Inc. as well – such a delightful take on the monsters under your bed story.
Somehow we had gum stringing down the sides of our van. People of the world – put your used gum in the trash!!
Love the new logo, by the way!!
Bet – hope you’ve learned how to poke!!
Stennie – good luck with your new neighbor – I hope they just smile quietly at you! I hope you have a great & profitable Vegas trip!!
Duke – DVDs lying around I haven’t watched yet – the first 3 are boxed sets: 3 Indiana Jones, 4 Jack Ryan, 6 James Bond & Airplane (the I’m not Shirley version).
Hope you hear you guys next week!!
Across the Universe looked like pretentious crap. Didn’t Julie Tamor direct it? The only movie I liked that she did was “Frida”. “Titus” pissed me off and this looked just as lame. With a line like “Music is the only thing that makes any sense anymore, man.” in the trailer, it’s pretty much GOT to be shit in my mind. If there’s a dictionary of cliche’s, that line is in it.
Funny that I should listen to this episode now—TheWife and I have officially run out of practical spending money after moving to the Big Apple. Furniture, utilities, food (even more expensive than in LA), 6-months advance rent, and more have all tapped us out. So, I know your pain, Bet! And it’s bloody hot here and we’ve no cash for an air conditioner.
I hate flip flops because they do not provide adequate protection for your feet. So there.
Sten is right about Chris Matthews. I HATE that guy as much as Bet hates “Green Acres”. And Bet, he does yell all the time—just like Billy Mays. Neither guy has an “indoor voice.”
What was it that Obama said that was historic? I’m personally sick of all this stuff, though I’m enjoying his international tour. It’s so surreal seeing him shaking the Iraqi prime minister’s hand. I wonder if the world thinks we already elected him. I also hope that Obama gets to meet the Iraqi PM again AFTER 1/20/9
I say “sheesh” and “go fig” a lot. The latter gets a comment every now and again.
Oh yeah, topic suggestion: shows you wish were canceled but are still on. My answer to this is: Most of the shows on TV. I like nothing. I’m a TV snob.
Another topic suggestion: shows you used to love but now hate (either from them becoming bad as you watched them or you revisiting them as an older person and finding them sucky). For the former, I say “Battlestar Galactica”. I don’t hate it, but it got reeeal annoying right before the final scene from the final episode of the first half of the final season. Don’t want to give it away, but I’ll still be watching in 2009, but the stuff that leads up to it is some of the most stupid, annoying, nonsensical stuff I’ve seen on TV. I was ready to jump ship (no pun intended) if it weren’t for that great final scene.
For the latter I’d say “Get Smart” which I loved as a kid but can’t stomach as an adult. I love Buck Henry’s stuff, normally, but that show was so stupid after the first few eps. I could go on with other shows for this category, but I won’t.
My candidate for Brilliant but Cancelled: Brisco County Jr.—cheesy show, but a *lot* of fun. There was even an episode where *the* Timothy Leary plays an herbal specialist.
Re: Duke’s comment above, I have untold movies laying around unwatched. 🙁 I’ve lost track since I recently digitized most of my DVD collection to iPod format before the move (I then sold most of the ones I ripped). But it’s a problem. I need to go through my hard drives and data DVDs and start paring down. 🙁
Sorry, I should keep these “catch-up” comments short. Maybe I’ll add mustard next time.
Aaaahahahahahahahaha!!!
