I saw Donald O’Connor’s one-man concert in Oakland while I was in high school. Couldn’t dance anymore but a softshoe, but man did he entertain! A few years later, in the same theater, I saw Debbie Reynolds. At one point she made fun of the modern music “what are these kids listening to?” and grabbed her crotch, saying “don’t they know what’s down there???!” I shook hands with her about 3 months ago (she came to see a show I was in) and I nearly fell over. Classy, beautiful, short lady she is!
No apologies – any time someone sings in this world, it’s a better place 😀
If I went to Stenn’s to watch Animal House, could I try out that mattress? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge!!
Was the innuendo too obvious?
BTW… Stennie, The whole drive-in gang will be at the Mission Tiki Drive-In along with some cool classic Mopar cars.
Whenever Bet come out to L.A. we gotta meet up and sling back a few shots!
Sorry, the date for the drive-in thingy is August 23rd.
The great thing about That’s Entertainment Part 1 is that we get to see one of the last looks of the great MGM studio backlot, of which there were actually 2 backlots. One of my secret passions is trying to locate any existing photos of the the old studio lots. MGM was amazing and it’s funny that Debbie Reynold’s was mentioned before because she’s told the story that when a-hole Kirk Kirkorian bought the studio in the 70’s and announced plans to tear out the backlot and sell off the land, Debbie pleaded with kirkorian not go ahead with his plans to demolish the old girl. In fact she offered to sell tickets at the front gate if he promised to keep the old lot intact.
So sad. Here are some great online photos of MGM. Bet, you might recognize some of these from That’s Entertainment.

I’m going to guess ahead at the topic and put in a great one that my friend came up with. Olympic Air Guitar. That is the best one I’ve heard of. We also tried to come up with the scoring system for Olympic parallel parking—up the difficulty level if there’s a cell phone involved, etc.
And I hope the damn beach volleyball is finally over.
Stenns – how awesome that the annoying neighbor is gone! Who cares if she was waiting for you, she’s GONE and you don’t have to see her craziness again.
Amazing that Drinky became the most traveled prez – before he got the job, he’d never been anywhere but Mexico.
Bester – why is a basketball hoop bad news? They can be fun!
I got Lay Lady Lay right away! Which by the way, a song with horrible grammar right in the title.
My Sharona is not by Cheap Trick, but by the Knack.
Here’s a topic: as I listen to the HB, I am in my kitchen making some fabuloso, and yes, unseasonal, potato pancakes. I have this particular recipe from the best cook in history, and therefore, I make them better than anyone else. My question: What dish do you make better than anyone else in the world?
“My Sharona is not by Cheap Trick, but by the Knack.”
D’OH! Once again I am revealed for the huge music poseur and fraud that I am. You are so correct. In fact, I am surprised Bet didn’t correct me on that one.
Olympics: every time I tune in I never get to see the events I really want to, namely fencing and team handball. It’s always swimming. I can’t swim, so I think that anybody who can must be juiced (including Bet). So I haven’t tuned in much.
The Dark Knight: Heath Ledger really brought it, didn’t he? I really enjoyed the movie for the most part, but they could’ve lifted the whole Harvey Two-Face portion and given it its own movie and tightened up the running time. Then they would’ve had a great film on their hands.
Esther Williams: I watched one of her films a few weeks ago. It wasn’t so great, but there was an amazing dance sequence with Cyd (“DAY-amn”) Charisse and Ricardo “Smiles, everyone, smiles!” Montalban. Take a look:

And that’s about as far as I’ve gotten so far.
I never heard you say it! Because if I had, I’d have been all over you like a rooster on a june bug.
I remember when you could buy $2.00 words for twenty-five cents.
Up where I live in Manhattan, the air doesn’t smell so bad, actually. We’re not too far from the Hudson, I think.
I seem to recall a “That’s Entertainment” the series. Am I remembering an alternate universe’s Sunday evening at 6pm? I want to say that it was hosted/voiced-over by Tom Bosley and it had clips from more than just musicals. And no, I’m not thinking of those infomercials he more recently did.
Congratulations on your neighbor moving, Sten! Condolences on Alfonzo leaving, too, though…
Sorry about your new neighbors, Bet. Our neighbors keep to themselves. It’s nice.
I TOTALLY WANT THAT BEAR, THOUGH!!
Either a bear or a life-size terracotta warrior. Our apartment actually has a lobby. Seriously. The building has a lobby and so does our apartment. It’s pretty cool, actually.
George Lucas can fuck off for a NUMBER of other reasons, too. Also, there’s “Tucker” which was pretty good, as I recall—not great. But he didn’t direct that. Nor did he direct “Howard the Duck” but he did produce both.
But yeah, he should move on—Star Wars is dead… DEAD!
I think those humdingers need to be a bit harder.
I remember past humdingers being hard.
Margaritaville I did not get, though. Maybe because I don’t drink?
It was still fun, though. You guys just play the kazoos too well, I think that’s the problem.
Siskita described Debbie Reynolds as “Classy, beautiful, short lady she is!”
But Siskita, herself fits that description!
Sal, those are some great pictures! I’m curious what that area looks like now—I have a feeling I’ve been by there, since I’ve been all over the west side of LA, but I don’t recognize anything in those pictures.
I didn’t end up caring for “Dark Knight” BTW, Sten. I wrote an entirely too long and entirely too anal-retentive deconstruction of all that I thought was wrong with the film at my site, so I’ll save it from here. However, I will say that Batman really didn’t do much in this movie, did he? It was mostly about Harvey and Joker. I also think that Ledger’s performance was just a little underwhelming to me just because it had been hyped so much. I think he was a brilliant actor, though. Reeeally liked him in “Monster’s Ball.”
OK, enough for me—I’m catchin’ up!
