Ooh—I just noticed the icon on the URL line (what are those things called again?). Cool! Is this new? The boy likes to play with his sock monkey now.
Random notes while actually trying to make it thru the podcast this week:
-Let’s be Facebook pals! I’m relatively new too, and still trying to find my way in the dark.
-Jesus, do you guys even watch movies any more?
-Life’s been hectic – will check out the Comfy Chair…
-Bet’s got a CD shredder? Now I know the resting place of my recent CD mix.
-Sorry, nowadays I’d call the cops. I learned my lesson on one weeknight around 2 am. Alas, it didn’t involve a pool.
-What is it about Michael Phelps’ eating habits that fascinates us all? Not since Subway’s Jared has one’s diet so enraptured a nation.
-Congrats on your exercise commitment. Keep it up.
Olympic events:
1. Spelling bee, although there might be a slight language barrier, like sentence diagramming or X-word puzzles.
2. Obstacle course. Wall climbing, tire rolling, rope swinging, the works.
3. Olympic Amazing Race! Sorry, but been jonesing. (Season 13: 9/28!)
4. Olympic Price is Right – based on the host country’s economy and purchasing patterns. Might actually be enlightening – How much is a week’s worth of food to a Chinese family? Wow, it’s just filled with Olympic spirit!
5. Olympic Capture the Flag – which might be a bit too close to Olympic World War III. (Cue Peter Gabriel’s “Games without Frontiers”….)
Isn’t there a Python sketch about Thomas Hardy doing competitive novel-writing? How bout Olympic limerick…er, -ing?
How about Simon & Garfunkel’s “Cecilia” modified for Siskita. Something like: “Kita, your breakin’ my heart. Your shakin’ my confidence lately. Oh Siskita, I’m down on my knees. I’m beggin’ ya please to come home”
First of all, I commend Stennie on cutting this week’s episode to EXACTLY 1:00:00! Quite a feat!
I like you Sal
You can digitally sing to me any time.
I will set a date night with ThePete someday to have a hucklebug night. Candles will be bought, garlic pasta will be cooked, Trader Joe’s 3-buck chuck, maybe some popcorn…Issue is that I’m desperate for podcasts to listen to on the subway train or walking around NY, so I tend to save stuff for the headphones rather than when I’m at home. Then again, we can always use a splitter when Pete & I are out and about together.
Speaking of walking around NY – walking through Time Square in the middle of Tourist season without bumping into anyone taking pictures of the buildings or staring down at a map, or dumbly standing in a large family group with squirmy kids or strollers in the middle of the sidewalk wondering “oh so Marge, where should the family go for dinner tonight? Hard Rock Cafe? That sounds neato.” UGH! MOVE! I have a goddamned audition to get to! I digress – oh yeah, THAT should be an Olympic event.
I just contacted BBC America, because I agree that us Britophiles should not be fed accent subtitles. I emailed them: “I would like to express my disdain for having subtitles injected into the shows I watch on BBC America. Americans are not stupid, we don’t need to have heavy accents “dictated” to us via text on a screen. If we decide for ourselves that we need subtitles, we will turn on closed captioning, if available. If not, we can record accent-heavy shows and hit rewind if we missed anything. If we have trouble with an accent, leave it to us to open our ears and become accustomed to it rather than spoon-feeding it to us via subtitles.”
Of course, I didn’t tell them I don’t watch BBC America, but this is what I WOULD have emailed them, had I encountered the subtitles as you did. That pisses me off. To quote Kim Jong Il in “Team America”: “Inevitabre! Things are inevitabrey going to change! Goddamnit, open your fucking ears!”
-Siskita
I like Sal’s suggestion too, but it’s up to you guys.
However, isn’t it:
You’re shaking my confidence DAILY?
No biggie, and I wouldn’t trust my warped sense of hearing.
Oh well, ‘scuse me while I kiss this guy. Hold me closer, Tony Danza.
Patrick, you forgot the second line to Hold me closer, Tony Danza:
Count the head lice on the highway
Like CCR sez There’s a bathroom on the right too.
Also, Donuts make my brown eyes blue
And let us not forget the old Rolling Stones classic, “I’ll never be your Easter bunny.”
Patrick: you are right! I humbly prostate myself to you! I don’t know what i was thinking.
It’s like how I used to think this lyric “Slow burning water” was really “Smoke on the Water”
Too much Pineapple Express in my youth!
I’m a pool hall ace. (it took me a while to figure that one out.)
(Sorry for turning the comments section into “Misheard Lyrics Central”.)
In the words of Paul McCartney: Sunday monkey play piano song. Play piano song.
You mean we’re supposed to listen to the whole show??
You’ll have a lyrics quizz posted for Monday. And that’ll be your only warning.
On the Olympics—what about Sudoku instead of crosswords? Gets around the language thing, and the Japanese inflicted it on us in the first place.
On Olympic eating, the Japanese do surprisingly well on that too. You need to watch more Travel Channel with the food competition shows. I think the little Japanese guy has won the Nathan’s hot dog thing for the last few years.
Olympic Amazing Race. ‘Nuff said.
I bet we’re only a hair away from Olympic poker. What do you gamble on that? What currency? How do you stake medals?
I’m not an overachiever in submitting early. I hadn’t gotten around to listening to last week’s HB yet, and so I cheated from chat.
Here’s your lyrics quiz!
These august (ahem) songs were top ten hits in the month of August from the years 1959-1983. Why those years? I was originally going to make the scope from 1961-1985, but in those last two years the song selection really suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked (not that the songs I did use are Waterloo Sunset). So back to the 50s it was. Now, name these tunes.
1959
How come my heart deserts me, burning full of love and desire?
How come every time she kisses me, it sets my soul on fire?
1960
Tonight my love we’ll share a sweet embrace
We’ll soon forget there’s any other place
1961
You said your love was true, and we’d never, never ever part
Now you want someone new and it breaks my heart, oh
1962
This is my last time, not asking any more
If you don’t do right, I’m gonna march outta that door
1963
When we walk down the aisle together
We will vow to be together ‘til we die
1964
If I had it in my power
I would arrange for every girl to have your charms
Then, every minute, every hour
Every boy would find what I found in your heart
1965
But the melody keeps haunting me
Reminding me how in love we used to be
1966
Every time I see that girl
You know I wanna lay down and die
But I really need that girl
Don’t know why I’m livin’ a lie
1967
Pardon the way that I stare
There’s nothing else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak
1968
Yes, I’m with you my love
It’s the morning and just we two
1969
She’s leaving now ‘cause I just heard the slamming of the door
The way I know I’ve heard one hundred times before
1970
I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you’ll walk back through that door
1971
You know I’d rather give my love to a poor guy that has a love that’s true
Than to be fooled around and get hurt by you
1972
And am I wrong to hunger for the gentleness of your touch
Knowing I got somebody else at home who needs me just as much
1973
I’m a faithful follower of Brother John Birch
And I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church
1974
I live in a house that looks out over the ocean
And there’s some stars that fell from the sky
1975
For all the times you told me you need me
Needing me now is something I could use
1976
‘Cause what I say may not happen the same way
Now could be forever
1977
Take my hand, come with me, baby, to Love Land
Let me show you how sweet it could be
Sharing loving with me
1978
I can’t hope that I’ll hold you for long (ooh)
You’re a woman who’s lost to your song (ooh)
1979
Can’t you see that it’s love you really need
Take my hand and I’ll show what a love could be, before it’s too late
1980
Feel so good when we’re lying here
Next to each other lost in love, yeah baby
Baby when we touch, I love you so much
You’re all I ever dream of, yeah baby
1981
You can tell everyone that we’re through
And you might even believe it, too
1982
Some important impresario
Has a message for the band
1983
Tell us commander, what do you think?
‘Cause we know that you love all that power
Is it on then, are we on the brink?
We wish you’d all throw in the towel
I still like the idea of combining skeet shooting and gymnastics.

Thanks for the suggestion about couples listening to HB together, but for Siskita and I, when we’re together, we are either watching movies/TV or working on projects or talking or… *you know.* I suppose we could have the HB on in the background during *some* of those things
Bet: I understand about the lack of support on video projects. :\ We made over 40 episodes of The 5 Minute Show and hardly ever got comments on them. I finally just took them all off of YouTube. I’m slowly reposting them to Revver so I can make a few pennies off of them. But I feel your pain. You work hard on this stuff and then nobody comments. But hey, like you said, do it for yourself, not for the fame.
Have you thought about cross-promoting your vids? Like posting them on more sites than just YT? I used to post to Utterz a lot—they can automatically crosspost to a few different sites, including YouTube, plus they have a community there that you might be able to hook into. You might also upload to other video sites manually. There are a lot of possibilities out there to get your videos in front of people.
I apologize for not watching more of your vids—I *thought* I set up my YouTube notifications to email me when my contacts/friends/etc upload new vids, but I think I’ve gotten one email from them. So, my humble apologies for not supporting a fellow Internet Video Entrepreneur!
Sten: Congratulations on cleaning the home cube—I think you’re definitely making headway on quitting smoking. You’ve got the anxious behavior of the addict that makes you do SOMETHING with your hands. I’m a caffeine addict, so I know what you’re going through. I quit caffeine once a year for a month (just to prove to myself I can still do it) and I go through the same thing—with much more headaches and pissyness, though. Then again, I don’t have a caffeine patch
Are you back on the patch, BTW?
I’ve got a fuck off for subway trains that go out of service WHILE I’M ON THEM. Got stranded half-way to Hell’s Kitchen while listening to you guys yesterday and had to walk to another station to get on another train to meet up with Siskita at a flea market that was closing when I finally got there. Lowlight. However, I did get to listen to more of the HB
Highlight.
Say, speaking of Stennie not following through, how’s the guitar coming, Sten? o_O
I hear you both on exercise—it’s the most boring thing ever. I could never get into it. I like *doing things* and just working your muscles is not really doing something.
Sorry I’m falling behind again—unlike Siskita, I never leave the apartment—actually been sick for a couple of weeks (long story), so I eat at Subway more than I ride the subway.
I only have time to listen when I’m doing chores. And I’m a guy, so you can imagine how often that is!
AM I RIGHT, LADIES? BACK ME UP ON THIS!
