Hucklebug, Episode 118: Happy (?) Yom Kippur, RIP Mr. Clean, Stan Kann and Mystery Third Person We Couldn’t Remember (it was Nick Reynolds of the Kingston Trio), shout-outs, movies (Stennie: Recount, I Love You Again, The History Boys; Bet: none!), highlights (no lowlights this week), fuck-offs and you-rules, Mike’s Unbelieveably Hard and Incredibly Difficult One-Hit Wonders Lyrics Quiz! (I’m pleased to say that while editing I did manage to think of #17. But I’ll leave it a mystery in case anyone else wants to have a go).
Music: “The Hucklebuck,” The Griswalds; “The Hucklebuck,” The Doc Severinson Orchestra, “Dansa Hucklebuck,” The Tommys, “Ariel,” Dean Friedman, “The Hucklebuck,” Frank Sinatra
Well, we learn a little bit about Stennie with these quizzes. Last time:
“I’m so kicking your ass, Bet!”
This time:
“This quiz is so bullshit!”
The songs used were all top 40 songs, from the following years (asterisks denote my own favorite OHWs):
1. 1963, #2
2. 1965, #12
3. 1966, #5*
4. 1968, #16
5. 1968, #25
6. 1968, #22
7. 1969, #12
8. 1969, #9*
9. 1971, #9
10. 1971, #20
11. 1972, #12
12. 1974, #8
13. 1976, #9
14. 1977, #26*
15. 1977, #9
16. 1979, #13
17. 1979, #5
18. 1981, #25
19. 1981, #22*
20. 1983, #36
Scoring so far: Bet 7.5, Stennie 1.5. I really can’t give you credit for #20, since you probably let Mr. Middlebrow down in ways you can’t fathom.
Instead of telling everybody the answers, I figured it’d be better to let you listen. Go here:

Consider yourselves on double-secret probation until you see Out of Sight. It’s for your own good, really. Since we’re Facebook Movie Compatibility Soulmates, I’m confident you’ll not only lurve it, but you’ll ultimately wonder how you could have gone so long without seeing it and knowing of its underrated awesomeness.

How do you get the “magnificent bastard” epithet without the Rommel? (I think Stennie got it toward the end.) Perhaps I was too oblique. Wouldn’t be the first time. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066206/quotes
As self-appointed consiglieri for Hucklebug Industries and its various subsidiaries, here’s my two cents’ on the use of music: Any song written after 1923 (and certainly a pop standard like That Old Black Magic) is probably NOT in the public domain. And thanks to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998, nothing is going into the PD until 2018 at the earliest. And that’s just for the words and music of the song itself. If you use a sound recording (as opposed to, say, playing it yourself on the clarinet), that’s protected by its own copyright which probably won’t expire until 95 years after it was created.
If “Ariel” also has the lyrics “We got the munchies, and I made some spaghetti” and “bombs bursting in airrrrrrriiiiiiellll . . . “ then I remember it. And “Smoke from a Distant Fire.” But that quiz was a stone-cold bastid.
Re: GAMES. Bet mentioned it a few episodes back, and while it made me jump up with recognition to get an obscure reference – I couldn’t quite work it into a comment. Kinda like when someone mentions a great band you like. What do you do – say “Wooooooo, (band name) is awesome. Wooooo! (awkwardly hold up lighter)”
I dropped the magazine maybe 20 (?) years ago before it went bimonthly (as opposed to monthly). I’ve thought of resubscribing, but you’d think – in this day and age of the death of print magazines and newspapers – I could subscribe for less than $26.95 for 10 issues. I know it’s a niche magazine, but cripes, I can do crosswords for free online. I just miss the humorous, fun way in which challenging word and logic games were presented.
See, I told you I couldn’t work it into a concise comment. Sigh. Those crickets you hear now tell me I shoulda just sent an e-mail…
Re: RECOUNT. I heard K. Spacey being interviewed about it, and it seemed interesting. Stennie, if you keep going back to reliving presidential elections, you may want to skip over 1984. Twas a dark day for the Democrats, and may have been partly due to Mondale selecting a female running mate. It might really drive you bonkers, if you weren’t already halfway there to start with.
Also – thank God you guys also struggled with that music quiz. I’ve never felt stupider in my life than perusing Mike’s quiz. I bow to your collective knowledge, cause I didn’t recognize a one.
Mike, I just want to go on record as saying that while Stennie might have let me down by not getting #20, she fully redeemed herself by knowing It’s Not Unusual “by heart.” I bet she even knows all the Tom Jones moves that go with it.
Stennie, you can never be a disappointment so long as you’re a Tom Jones fan.
Little Miss Sunshine (Sunshine= Danny Boyle movie about astronauts reigniting the sun)
Reds Dawn! You got it!
See? Mine suck. :\
I like the timestamp format. I’m anal, though.
Sorry, a bit swamped this week for comments!
PS I don’t think you watch my happy thing videos!! 🙁 They’re 12 seconds each, and they’re all just me eating an apple—don’t apples make everyone happy?
I’m with Stennie. That quiz was impossible. Although I’m also someone who never knows the lyrics to anything.
I’ve got this new feature on iTunes—Genius? What the heck is it and should I turn it on? Since it’s going to recommend songs, I wonder if it’s like those sites that always recommend Celline %^#! Dion.
Please send a shout-out to Nick-the-Child-not-the-Cancer. He crawled off my bed tonight while I was changing him and hit his head on the floor. He’s got a BIG boo-boo.
