Hucklebug, Episode 121: Showtime at the Apollo, shout-outs, movies (Stennie: Love Crazy; Bet: none), highlight & lowlights, fuck-offs and you-rules, How TV Characters would vote in the 2008 election
Music: “The Hucklebuck,” performed by (respectively): Tommy Dorsey’s Orchestra, Canned Heat, Pearl Bailey, Frank Sinatra
Make it three—I have Night Ride on my iPod, although I would not put it up there as one of the top songs I’m listening to from that era. Although I’m not sure where my iPod is. I think Nick-the-child-not-the-cancer may be sneaking it into his crib and grooving to it.
And I noticed in the “how would the teevee characters vote” that you put the women in Obama’s camp. Some of the most vehement anti-Obama stuff I’ve heard has been from women, and it’s not for easy reasons like racism. It’s usually on things like immigration and taxes. Marge Simpson—McCain. No question. She’s heard some soundbite somewhere and that’s it. By the time you’re reading this, it will be the last damn night of this campaign. Have a drink to celebrate that the long national nightmare is almost over!
Odd Couple—Oscar—McCain, Felix—not sure, but most likely Obama.
Les Nesman—Obama.
Pa Ingalls—McCain. Michael Landon may have been the leftiest lefty, but Pa is a “values” voter
For other shows:
All in the Family—Older generation McCain, Meathead and Gloria—Obama.
What about scifi shows, like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica? Do they vote social issues or military?
I dunno. I’ll have to think about it.
As the world’s foremost authority on WKRP, I can support Stennie’s division: Carlson, Les, and Herb are all McCain supporters, while Andy, Johnny, Venus, Bailey, and Jennifer are all for Obama. It’s the suits vs. dungarees dichotomy. Actually, Johnny probably couldn’t vote because the gov’t still things he’s in Los Angeles, where he’s registered as “Johnny Sunshine.”
And I’ve gotta believe that Steven and Elyse voted for Nader in 2000 and have regretted it ever since. They still follow and support the guy, but have voted a straight D ticket ever since. They also like Kucinich, being from the same state and of the same ideology.
I’m pretty sure Alex has a restraining order against him from the Palin camp, though. Same deal with Kucinich regarding his wife.
Hey, this is the FIRST time I have been able to comment AFTER I heard the current show…there has to be some sort of special shout-out for that..
A couple of follow ups to who votes which way, i disagree that Nels would vote for McCain. I think he would TELL his shrew wife he did, but he would vote Obama, and tell Pa, if anyone…
And didn’t the Brady’s have a Sammy Davis Jr. episode? I think they would spend the whole day talking about voting McCain, but would vote conscience once in the booth..
I also think Lisa can’t vote..did she get her green card? I don’t know if she’s done the whole citizenship thing..which brings me to
I love Lucy.
I think Fred is so pissed off he would either not vote, or write in Reagan (or Dewey)
I think Ricky can’t vote (See Lisa above…)
Lucy and Ethel would go to the polls together, Ethel planning to vote McCain, Lucy Obama, and they would see William Holden at the polling place, comedy would ensue, and they would both vote for the “wrong” person…and all would be the same outcome, and Lucy would cry at the end.
Ozzie and Harriet would be an Obama sweep.
On Cheers, everyone (except Cliff and the old drunk guy) would vote Obama, even Rebecca, who would only change her mind at the very last second, while smoking a decision cigarette, and with great gusto, stamp it out, go into the voting booth and pull the lever…moments later, the entire place would be engulfed in flames, so all their votes would be lost. (tell me you didn’t see THAT coming?)
Well, this was fun. I guess I may even be able to keep up if I keep working out at the gym…Hey Stennie, remember where we were one year ago??? ahhh, jellyfish….
Okay, you asked for it.
It’s your post-election edition of the lyrics quiz! Today’s theme: all Beatles. All songs by Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and maybe even Starr. No cover versions performed and released by the Beatles, these are all original songs by the fab quad.
Name these tunes:
1
I think about you night and day
I need you and it’s true
2
In my mind there’s no sorrow
Don’t you know that it’s so
3
I got lips that long to kiss you
And keep you satisfied
4
Because I know she’ll always be
The only girl for me
5
And now you’ve changed your mind
I see no reason to change mine
6
I wonder what went wrong
I’ve waited far too long
7
I’ve been waiting here for you
Wondering what you’re gonna do
Should you need a love that’s true
It’s me
8
So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
9
If the sun has faded away
I’ll try to make it shine
There is nothing I won’t do
10
And though we may be blind
Love is here to stay and that’s enough
11
And now the time has come
And so, my love, I must go
12
I feel as though
You ought to know
That I’ve been good
As good as I can be
13
You’re thinking of me
The same old way
You were above me
But not today
14
When I held you near
You were so sincere
15
She says that long ago she knew someone
But now he’s gone, she doesn’t need him
16
Man, I was mean but I’m changing my scene
And I’m doing the best that I can
17
See the people standing there
Who disagree and never win
And wonder why they don’t get in my door
18
You said that you would be late
About an hour or two
19
Without looking out of your window
You could know the ways of heaven
20
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
21
Sounds of laughter, shades of earth
Are ringing through my open ears
22
Some kind of solitude is measured out in you
You think you know me but you haven’t got a clue
23
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere on our way back home
24
All these years I’ve been wandering around
Wondering how come nobody told me
All that I was looking for was somebody
Who looked like you
Ahhh, I get it—like a rat gnawing at your stomach? I got it now—sorry 🙁
Awww, thanks for the plug Bet: http://www.dailymugshot.com/main/show/421
Heeey, it’s not that easy to just get up and go to Asia! Besides, I haven’t given up yet—in spring I should hear back from an ESL placement agency I’m signed with. Plus I’m in touch with a couple guys over there. I’m going to hit them up for help with finding a job and see how things go…
And yeah, it was from the “prequel trilogy” NOT the Holy Trilogy.
So sad about granny! I’m praying to the gods of the Spanish pilgrims despite my atheism for the wellness of her! (aka: sending positive thoughts her way!)
How is she now? Better I hope!
I loved the MTP thing with McCain—Daily Show ran the clip where he tried to name the 5 Secs of State, only to remember 4. They then cut away to Stewart saying something else about the interview, then cut back to the interview and ran the clip where McCain blurts out: “SCHULTZ! That’s the fifth one!” I laughed so damn hard…
A friend of mine who lives out in Jersey, in an upscale neighborhood, too (she’s married to a lawyer)—on her way back from the mailbox someone drove by and called her a “nigger lover”. Apparently, that person saw her Obama lawn-sign. She also mentioned she has McCain supporters in her neighborhood, too. So much for living in the “fake” America.
Mr. C would vote for Obama—I see him as one of the wiser dads I grew up watching on TV…
It’s Cynthia McKinney that is running for the Green party.
Sorry, Sten—I don’t see anything attractive about John McCain back in the day—I know I’m a straight guy, but I can spot a good looking fellow and McCain—bleh…
Sten, you’re right about everyone on Murphy Brown—Jim would totally vote for Obama.
Johnny Fever would have forgotten to vote because he was high.
I think I have trouble accepting that anyone I like would vote McCain, though. I view McCain as anti-woman (and yes, even Anti-Mrs. Woman). Ever since his reference to “the health of the mother” being an excuse that had been stretched to mean almost anything, I am *baffled* as to how any woman could vote for the guy. It’s like he hates women. Unbelievable! Then Palin hates the gays (she’s the Gay Marriage Nazi: 2 boys? No marriage for you!).
So, if you’re pro-hate, vote McCain. That’s the way I’d look at it if I were a classic TV character (or even if I wasn’t).
Hey Sten, did you ever play that ten bucks I gave you at the going away party? Or was that part of the $200 you blew? (just curious!)
Was this week’s show shorter than usual? It felt short.
Haha, my captcha below is “change96” I’d prefer “change08” thank you. 😀
Wow – having commented in so long – almost forgot how. All the best to Granny & the family. That’s some scary stuff.
Loved the TV characters voting!
Oooo Lily – love the Star Trek question. I’d have to go social. Isn’t it time for a cute kid picture update?? Any Halloween pics???
So – who/what was/were Bet & Stennie for Halloween? And what did you always want to be as a kid but never were?
I’m so happy I voted by mail-in ballot! Let’s cross our fingers….
RIP Future President Obama’s grandmother 🙁 Everyone on Twitter has posted, at least once, the following phrase: “Just one more day…”
Sorry, Kellie. I’m a bad mommy. No trick or treat pictures, and he didn’t go. I figure an eight-month-old doesn’t need a costume. I took a couple of pictures yesterday because it had been over a month since I took my camera out.
Mike—that quiz kind of saddens me. The lyrics when looked at like that are so….trite. Ouch.
Our long national nightmare is almost over! We may have a few weeks before they start running for 2012.
Do I have to threaten an embargo until you watch Out of Sight? Because I will do it—I will totally threaten to stop listening/commenting. No chance I would actually follow through, of course. I’m too addicted to the comment-and-shout-out cycle. 72 hours after missing the podcast, you’d find me wandering down Franklin Street, fitfully scratching my neck, murmuring, “ . . . wiggle like a snake, waddle like a duck . . . “
I’d also like an extra-special, election-eve fuckoff for Elizabeth Dole and her pathetic turd of an attack ad. You can read the details at my blog but, long story short, she accused Kay Hagan of being an atheist and taking “godless” money. Talk about the last act of a desperate man…

Good (pagan/agnostic) vibes to Granny.
Obama 08!
May I also offer up a You Rule to one of my classmates who went to a Palin rally in Raleigh and held up an Obama sign?
Pretty goddam ballsy, if you ask me.
