Hucklebug, Episode 138: Our Inaugural Friday night recording session! RIP Natasha Richardson, happy wedding David Letterman, happy belated birthday Alan Arkin and our own Siskita, shout-outs, movies (Stennie: The More the Merrier, Silent Running, Bet: WALL-E), lowlights & highlights, fuck-offs & you-rules, and Mike’s All-‘80s Lyrics Quiz!
Music: “The Hucklebuck,” performed by (respectively): Otis Redding, Lionel Hampton, Annette Funicellos, Frank Sinatra. Also: “Don’t Ask Me Why,” Billy Joel.
What a treat to find a Hucklebug episode on Sunday night!
I thought the soup and smoothie recipes were about throwing things in pot or a blender. Can they really be considered cooking? Admittedly, the recipes have a lot of ingredients, but at the worst, you’re only chopping the vegetables for the soup for five to ten minutes. If you’re lazy like me, you could buy the vegetables pre-chopped or ask the store to chop them up. Dandelion root coffee is available everywhere around here—health food store, pharmacy, Acme, Giant Eagle, etc. A year ago, I had never heard of drc, but now it’s everywhere. Here’s the website for the product I buy: http://www.dandyblend.com/index.htm
I’m 20 minutes from a new Whole Foods, but I find them overpriced and overcrowded. The customers there are incredibly rude. What is it about organic produce that brings out the worst in people?
Glenn Beck: he’s nuts, yeah. But I’ve seen his act before:

I don’t mean to be all passive-aggressive, but, uh, that 1982 song by the band that that you (Stennie) “never even heard of”. . . was on my last CD Mix (song from HS grad year).
My results on the lyrics quiz:
1980
a: I Got You – Split Enz
1981
a: Sprits in the Material World – The Police
“Oh, the MEEK, it’s the MEEK! I’m glad they’re getting something, they’ve had a helluva time [what with all the subjugation]”
b: The Waiting – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
1982
b: Never Say Never – Romeo Void
1983
b: In a Big Country – Big Country
1986
a: Don’t Get Me Wrong – The Pretenders
b: Fall on Me – R.E.M.
1987
b: Brilliant Disguise – Bruce (“Wee-wee”) Springsteen
1989
b: A Girl Like You – The Smithereens
I don’t think I recommended Silent Running so much as agreed with ThePete that it was a good complement to Wall-e and good for a “cautionary tale” film fest, along w/ Idiocracy. It does raise a good point (and a possible topic?) about the way we favorably embellish our memory of a movie or TV show or album, especially from our youth. On one hand, I sometimes wish I could get the Six Million Dollar Man on DVD or hulu.com, but, then, do I really? Is something I thought was awesome and brilliant when I was eight really going to hold up? I think I’m better off with my nostalgia-filtered memory. That said, I can’t wait to see the Land of the Lost movie . . .
For the record, I luurve the new schedule.
The Hucklebug: The surefire cure for a case of the Mondays.
A Fuck off to GSN for getting rid of WML? and To Tell the Truth.
A fuck off to CBS for cancelling Guiding Light. I don’t watch it anymore, but it played an important part in my childhood, and it was comforting to know it was still there even if I didn’t watch it.
A You Rule to Turner Classic Movies for the classy and audience friendly way they program their schedule. It’s nice to have one channel that gives a damn about its viewers.
I think it’s funny that the “routine” is trashed after one week!! have fun at the Hackensaw Boys Bet..at least you can facebook that you spent the evening enjoying HB!!
You Rule nomination, please, for the Iowa Supreme Court which just struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090403/ap_on_re_us/iowa_gay_marriage
“We are firmly convinced the exclusion of gay and lesbian people from the institution of civil marriage does not substantially further any important governmental objective,” the Supreme Court wrote.
I hate John Stossel.
He’s not a reporter, he’s a personal agenda furtherererer.
It was me that suggested Idiocracy/Silent Running/Wall-E triple feature.
Silent Running is not a perfect film, but I LOVE the message of the film. Plus, like you said, Sten, it’s about the flow of how humans ruin the planet meshing with the other two films.
So sorry about Granny, Bet!! Man, how about some good fortune to fall on that woman!! Sheesh!
Glen Beck is pretty lame all right—he’s been watching/listening to Alex Jones who has been doing this (literally) crying for the future of America thing for years now (though Jones seems to really believe that shyte). It’s my personal theory that Beck is the biggest lying faker that’s out there.
I know one cop who is not a bully—but he’s freshly out of the academy, so he hasn’t gotten crushed under the heal of humanity yet.
Stennie, I’m with you on things hanging off my knob. Very annoying.
I have no problem with the Friday night recording…
Oh and Jay says “Hi!” and “Yeah!”
Ok, I enjoyed your little April Fool. But Stenns, you should consider a career in radio. You could pull off the NPR voice, no problem!
So moving the show was unnerving to me, I’ll admit that. I get through shitty weeks by thinking ahead to the HB on the way to work on Thursday. Fine. I’ll start my week on a high note from now on, that’s all.
I too did mighty shittily on the music quiz, but if Duke is right with his responses below, then I do know all of these songs. How about if Mike comes on and kazoos songs instead of leaving lyrics? I’d be much better at it then.
Looking forward to hearing about the Hackensaw Boy trip!
Mr. Middlebrow, you’ve experienced the shocking horror of the CD Mix Challenge: Stennie never listens to anybody’s discs. Sorry you had to find out this way.
Quiz results: Mr. Middlebrow 6, Bet 5, Stennie 1. Middlebrow wins the Buick Skyhawk!
1980 I Got You – Split Enz (Bet)
1980 Don’t Ask Me Why – Billy Joel (Stenn—oh, wait…)

1989 A Girl Like You – The Smithereens (Middlebrow)
The reason why people always lose brilliant comments is because the energy to recreate them is usually vapid. If I lose an insipid one, it’s usually easy to recreate (“Hey, this is great. You rule!”) or you just don’t bother or miss it.
I’m gonna get either Mike or Stennie. Since we were discussing the other night which Billy Joel song was in the quizzzz, I’ve had Don’t Ask Me Why in my head. Make it go away please. Yes, it’s part of the soundtrack of my youth, but I want it to stop.
Joel McCrea is a little too whitebread for me. Very handsome, but something’s just not there Now, except for when he was very young, I could really get into some Clark Gable.
Bet—not sure if you’ve ever seen it or not, but you may want to watch “Saved!” with Mr. M. It’s got the whole religion thing going on, and for me, it’s got a little Martin Donovan.
This quiz was pretty much what I thought it would be—I’d know all the songs when I had the answers, but couldn’t place them when I’m just looking at random middle lyrics.
