Hucklebug, Episode 158: This week’s episode we’ve done something a little different. On recording night we were a little extra chatty and didn’t feel much like sticking to format. Here is the result, with only minimal editing and bumper music thrown in. It’s extra-long.
Pre-show chatter: saying dumb stuff to customers; spoilers for fuck-offs; pets; The RIP Show: Army Archerd, Larry Gelbart, Patrick Swayze, Henry Gibson, Jim Carroll, Mary Travers; new Drinking Game rule; Happy Rosh Hoshana; shout-outs; child abuse is hilarious; re: Shaun of the Dead commentary; organizing the Hucklebug CD Mix 10 Alternate Tracks Round Table Discussion; movies; Bet’s highlight, fuck-offs and you-rules.
Music: βThe Hucklebuck,β performed by Otis Redding, Lee Rocker, and Frank Sinatra.
Happy Rosh Hashana to you too. I haven’t listened to the episode yet, but I’m looking forward to some free-form HB tomorrow on my commute.
How about a theme song to the tune of one of my favorite REM songs, Superman.
Also, I still have the live show on tape that Bet made for me in 1987 of the REM show in Pittsburg recorded right after the stock market crash. Classic intro by Stipe to It’s The End of the World.
Re: Child abuse. Once got a wooden tennis racket – the frame, not the strings. Also, pulled backwards when running from my angry father so my head thudded off the asphalt driveway. My sister got her head put through a wall. Just a few of many similar instances of lovely parenting. Which is, of course, hilarious.
I liked this episode quite a lot. Looser, topics tended to come naturally. Glad to hear from you both.
Amazing Race this Sunday! Are you doing the fantasy pick-em game on Facebook?
Re: CD mix discussion. Can’t do a Sunday afternoon, but am free weeknights (including Friday) after 10 pm.
I love Larry Gelbart! I actually helped in a VERY tiny way with a failed (not my fault) pilot of his back in 2000 (I think) that shot a scene in a screening room I used to run. I had to run a projector while they shot.
And of course, I loved MASH. Best TV show ever, in my opinion.
Patrick Swayze was also a loss for hardcore MST3K fans. This Christmas will not be the Swayziest now that he is gone—but we will try! π
Google “Patrick Swayze Christmas” if you have no idea what I’m talking about. Or just go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZyJCV_dyug
I hadn’t heard Henry Gibson died! π That’s so sad. My favorite thing he did was the PSA against Death in “Kentucky Fried Movie.”
Bet, I think you’re thinking of “The Gashlycrumb Tinies” maybe? That was Edward Gorey. I love that book.
Re: the pic of me and my bro at the WTC when we were kids, Bet, like I said in the caption: I’m the cuter one. (On the left—back then, I was still taller than him.) Here’s the pic for non-facebookers: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thepete/3920077639/
I grew up in the suburbs and we barely talked to anyone beyond our block.
I have seen “Shawn” so many times, so I’m waiting for a moment when we’re looking to watch something fun and frivolous to listen to your commentary.
Is it Experian that gives you the free credit report? Or do I go to a .gov site?
Yay! Thanks for the Joe Wilson fuck-off!!
Here’s how Jay ThePal reacted to the whole “YOU LIE!” thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V-ofFDJkE8
Really fun show this week!!
I’m free for discussion either Fridays or Sundays, except this Sunday.
ThePete – Experian will give you the free report. The .gov provides a link to it. All three credit bureaus will try to get you to buy into their monthly programs, but you don’t have to do it. Just look at the page carefully for the tiny “free credit report” link.
Ah, cool—thanks, Michelle!
Just wanted to let you know that I’m alive and still listening to the HB!!! I’m here! I haven’t forgotten you!
I hope to have a friend & I sing “Let’s Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas” for Christmastime at an open mic, and see who gets it and who looks at us strangely.
Ah well…
I remember being spanked only a few times. I was a well-behaved kid for the most part.
Byeeeee!
To answer your question about if there will be any actors left to make movies after everyone dies off:
Yes. Adam Sandler will make them all.
Kind of commenting as I go here, having listened to most of the show in 5-10 min. segments.
So, I’m not just a Hucklebug listener, I’m also an ear worm. Yay! If I may be so bold, here’s a suggestion for Thomas Brewster’s theme song, based on R.E.M.‘s “Superman”:
Thomas (Thomas) Thomas Brewster’s here
And now he is commenting….
Larry Gelbart: Also wrote A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, IIRC, which I absolutely adored, even though I fell asleep watching it in my “Film as Literature” class. (Please forgive me if you mentioned that already. The bus was filling with undergrads and I had to postion myself near the door for easy disgorgement when we got to the law school.)
Hucklebug-o-rama: Definitely up for it; Friday nights, ideally between 8:00 and 10:00 eastern, would be best for me.
I don’t recall ever being spanked with an object. Like Siskita, I wasn’t naughty all that much, so there weren’t a lot of spankings. But no objects were used in my house—it was a swat on the butt.
Touched nothing, I think I’ve heard enough of your CD mixes to know what your listening preferences are like. Well, mostly. I’m trying not to figure Bet out too much.
As for the big round table CD Mix meeting of the minds, I’m good on weekends, but Sundays I’ll be distracted by football. Friday nights aren’t great, but I can do it if it’s scheduled.
Great story about Mary Travers: Jennifer Warnes was a regular performer on The Smothers Brothers Show and considered it a personal highlight when she met her idol Mary Travers while PP&M were guests on the last show. She said that Mary introduced herself as a libertine and winked, then Jennifer had to go look the word up.
The oddest thing I learned about the RIPs last week was about Henry Gibson. That was his stage name, chosen because it’s what the name “Henrik Ibsen” sounded like with a southern accent.
I got nothing on the rest of the recently deceased though.
The free-form format of the show was interesting, like a version of Jazz Odyssey that actually worked.
Really, one of these days, a hucklebug commentary on That Thing You Do!.
I haven’t finished listening to last week’s hucklebug or all of the cds yet…I’m trying hard to keep my lines, blocking and cues in my head…
so far it’s not workin well…I skipped FOUR pages last night.
Oy
Maybe I can catch up Monday when I’m fasting for Yom Kippur.
May all you chosen and goyim be inscribed…
mwa.
Marla
It IS Edward Gorey you’re referring to, Bet. One of my favorite cartoonists/artists, since I was a little girl. I guess I’m an odd one.
The government site is FreeAnnualCreditReport.com. The first time I went on I found MANY mistakes (like, I consolidated a student loan and the new loan was shown but the old loan was never marked “paid”, so it looked like I was 20,000 more in debt than I am.) It is definitely a good idea to check your reports.
I’m free for the CD Mix Chat any evening after the play closes, and Marla is busy with the play the next 3 weekends too. Wish us luck, last night (see marla’s note above) completely freaked me out!!
