Hucklebug Episode 177: RIP T-Bone Wolk, shout-outs, movies (Bet: none; Stennie: A Matter of Life and Death, (500) Days of Summer), lowlights & highlights, fuck-offs and you-rules, Best Songs by Selected Artists, This or That.
Music: “The Hucklebuck,” performed by Otis Redding, Lee Rocker, and Frank Sinatra.
This and That Responses:
Water out of your shoe over Rose….I would die of thirst before Olive Garden Table Wine crossed my lips again.
Best Van Morrison: Hands down Moondance (actually like Suede’s version too)
Salt or Pepper: White pepper because of it’s sneakiness
Simon and Garfunkel: Hazy Shade of Winter, Homeward Bound
Best of Bowie: Changes
Poison None. There are none. However, if pressed to pick I would have to say Swampjuice
Pearl Jam: Better Man
Pink Floyd: Time
I will have to say slumber party over camping out cause we have rattlers and scorpios here. I don’t do bugs well. Ask me about eating cereal through a fly net in the Outback.
C,S,N & (Y) Wasted on the Way
I would also like to call a disclaimer on the Poison question. I truly hate them, and generally do not choose Metal as a genre, but there is something otherworldly about listening to Metallica while riding on an East Texas red-clay back road doing 90.
I really do hope that Acupuncture works considering what I am paying to go to school for a Master’s in it. LMAO
Scorpions AND scorpios
Just listening to this ep now, but earlier today, I came across an old non-ipod mp3 player I bought once for a custom toy project, and found a buttload of podcasts including the Hucklebug from January 23, 2008! Can you believe you guys have been doing the HB for over 2 years??? I still feel like I bumped into Stennie at Skooby’s recently, but nope—that was like eons ago now!
Hey! Guess what’s just come from Netflix! “In the Loop”—I put in the queue because of you guys talking about it! (plus our queue was shockingly low on titles—I think we were down to 4!)
Bet, I am both envious of your surprise party and glad I’m not you. I don’t enjoy surprises like that—they don’t appeal to the control freak in me. But I’m glad you had a blast!
Sten, I don’t think ghosts are real. But I do love ghost movies. What are your guys’ favorite ghost movies? <—hey! It’s sort of like a topic suggestion! I can’t remember the last time I suggested a topic…
My favorite ghost movie is “Dead of Night” with “Poltergeist” a close second.
I don’t think I could meditate. I think I sort of meditate when I do artwork—my custom toys make me feel calm.
I also could not live without music. Movies I could survive without, but wouldn’t want to.
Oh and:
YAY MARLA!!
Just finished “In The Loop” and can’t say that I cared for it. In fact, while it was funny, it was kinda lame. Reprehensible people doing reprehensible things. Really fills the soul with hate.
I think I have a lot to cover, so on to it.
T-Bone Wolk. You’ve heard T-Bone’s work with Elvis on the albums King Of America, Spike, and Mighty Like a Rose, playing bass, guitar, and some accordion. And you’ll recall him playing with Elvis when he was the musical guest on SNL a couple of times. I posted some rehearsal footage at vimeo:

T-Bone was also always good with a proper lid.
A Matter Of Life And Death. It is, I think, the best of the Powell/Pressburger films, with Colonel Blimp coming in at second. Something about it has always struck me as unusual, though. It was a film made to ease tensions between the British and Americans after the war, and thus contains some very vivid and respected characters: the calm, cool English pilot, the American WAC, the extremely English doctor, and even an American Revolution casualty. So the flamboyance of the French aristocrat really stands out, to put it mildly. So I wonder if Michael and Emeric had it in mind to unite the two cultures in their common mockery of the French. (Remember when Common Mockery used to be funny on Whose Line?)
(500) Days Of Summer. I enjoyed this quite a bit. The non-linear structure worked, I thought, because while time may work in a straight line, your memory doesn’t. Plus, any girl who sings Sugar Town at karaoke will likely win me over (looking like Zooey Deschanel will help that cause). Fun fact: Zooey Deschanel’s mom played John Glenn’s wife in The Right Stuff.
Domino. I hate to correct Bet, but the proper lyrics are “roll me over, Romeo.” And Van’s best song is Into The Mystic.
Bowie. Either Queen Bitch, Moonage Daydream, Rebel Rebel, or Ziggy Stardust would be my pick.
Sun vs. stars. As a once-wise man said, I’ll follow the sun.
Pink Floyd. I’ll take either Wish You Were Here or, going way back, Arnold Layne.
CSN&Y: Easy one. I’ll always go with a Neil track, this one being Helpless.
Wow – a double You Rule week? I must have been very very good last week. Thank you guys! Stennie, I was particularly surprised because I’d forgotten all about sending you that cd. So don’t worry, I wasn’t afraid you’d forgotten, I was afraid I had.
I’m with Mike: Into the Mystic is my favorite Van song. Music over Movies, White over red OR rose. Comfortably Numb. And Sun. After all, if you don’t have the stars, there’s always the moon.
I’m chugging away on my audiobook. Sure is slow going though! Am I the only one who can only read 1 or 2 sentences at a time without fucking up?
At the risk of having this be all about me (and why shouldn’t it be?) I just wanted you to know that I am FINALLY all caught up. And yes, Stennie, it has felt like the Hucklebug has been my second care pages. The most touching thing was hearing how you (Stennie) called Bet the day of my surgery to get the updates because you forgot your password. Sweet. You rule.
Anyway, I am at about 80%, not ready to go back to work just yet (do I have to?) but am happier than I thought possible.
So thanks to you ladies and to all the HB fans who were so kind and thoughtful to me.
Oh and the BIG news, Hackensaw Boys in the ‘HAM this Thursday and I am ALL OVER IT and bringing sweets for the boys. Can’t wait. <3 you.
Go Marla!
Greetinks!
I’m really behind this week—hoping for a live shout out.
