I like Ben Affleck in very little. I cared even less for the “Man of Steel” movie, so when they announced the sequel would be a Batman/Superman movie I just shrugged. Then when they announced Affleck as Batman I was pretty surprised. First, he all but said he’d never play another super-hero. Second, he’s murdered two franchises (The Jack Ryan movies reboot and Daredevil). Third, most of the time, he’s not a very good actor but ranges from OK to pretty good when he’s got the right director. So, it just didn’t make much sense to me. Not that I was going to rush out and see it since “Man of Steel” was meh, for me, and is so different from the Superman universe of the comics that I have zero invested in it.
What I heard re: the business side of Affleck’s casting was that he had been offered the director’s chair on the Justice League movie after Argo did so well but was hesitant to take it. WB then, supposedly, said “How ’bout we sweeten the pot? Wanna play Batman?” Which boggles my mind for the previously-mentioned reasons. Just goes to show you that old Hollywood saying is true: you’re only as good as your last picture (and no worse–in the eyes of Hollywood, anyway).
FYI, Sten, there have been 3 Nolan Batman movies. Everyone who hasn’t seen the third one, “Dark Knight Rises,” NEEDS to continue NOT seeing it. Unless they want to MST it. It’s absolutely worth seeing in that case. The badguy’s voice, alone, is worth MSTing. The film is brimming over with wrongability.
Looove the slang terms. If I ever go back in time to Victorian England, I’m going to change my name to Master John Goodfellow.
So “The Netherlands” is slang for vagina? That gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “Going Dutch” doesn’t it? >_<
From now on I will be using the acronym "LLOL" which means "Literally Laughed Out Loud."
I think I'll have to check out some Squeeze music. Pandora must have some of their songs, right?
I came across three words or phrases that made me wonder about their origins, but I failed to write them down and have now forgotten what they were. :/ I guess I've got a couple weeks to remember them…
Happy whatever-holiday-this-is-coming-up ladies!
I had to leave a comment although I haven’t even finished listening to the show. I LITERALLY went “WOO HOO!” over Heidi’s movie review. Do watch it again if you can.
“Song of Childood” is a poem by Peter Handke. The movie was inspired and losely based on the poem, which is why you hear it throughout the movie. Here’s a link to the whole thing – scroll down for the English http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Wings_of_Desire
You didn’t ask for a full expose on the poem or the movie, so I’ll spare you the lecture on Existentialism.
Otto Sandler (Cassiel) is the guy from Das Boot, and Bruno Ganz (Damiel) is an actor you should see more movies of. He did some Italian move a while back that has “bread” in the title. That’s a great one to watch if that helps.
WARNING – You must avoid the sequel to this move at all costs. “In weiter Ferne, so nah!” (Faraway so Close, i think) is a sorry excuse for a movie. It is utter crap, and probably the worst movie in Wim Wender’s catalog. Now I know Crispy would say that ALL of his movies suck. But he isn’t here, so my opinion stands!
Ok, back to work. Looking forward to your Squeeze rankings on my drive home this afternoon.
Crap. Make that “loosely based.”
Howdy folks,
I really have been avoiding mainstream media lately, so I was out of the loop on the Ben Affleck “controversy” and the Miley Cyrus VMAs escapade. Who gives a shit? We’ve got another war to get involved in!
Honestly, I don’t care for superhero movies and I’m with y’all: there’s only one Batman and his name is Adam West. However, I have come to like and respect Ben Affleck’s work more as he’s gotten older. He’s actually a pretty good director.
So glad you liked Wings of Desire, Stennie. I haven’t seen it in at least 20 years, but I remember it taking me a couple viewings to understand what was happening. My most vivid memory is how beautiful the film looked. Visually, it’s stunning!
Thanks for the info on Squeeze. I don’t have anything by them in my current collection, though I did have a “hits” CD back in the ’80s. May have to try East Side Story (the original title of West Side Story, if you didn’t know!), especially since it was produced by Elvis Costello.
Have a great week off and happy Labor Day to all~!
I just listened to your ranking. Except for the top two and the last one -WRONG! Love Circles torpedoes Frank all by itself. A Round and A Bout isn’t anything more than another *?!#! compilation album. Singles, well like Stennie I have a fondness because it was the first, but meh. In general, I put at the top all of the original/pre-breakup #1 albums and Play. Then SFP, because that song alone still makes me cry. Then it’s a mixed bag after that, although Domino at the bottom is the right call.
And of all the albums, I still listen to Sweets most often. So neener.
I’m still working on my response to ranking the Squeeze albums – although, I will say, mighty fine job!
No, I’m writing today to see if you know about this site: http://lmgtfy.com . You must visit. LMGTFY stands for “Let me google that for you.”
Well ladies, it’s been a week…
I got my hair “cut” today, it’s actually an all-over trim. I did a shot of tequila before I went in because I thought when I told her over the phone, and in person that I wanted my hair CUT, she would do it. I met this hairdresser for the first time. It still cost me the same as a “cut” and I only know that because Zoe got a HUGE amount of hair cut off last week and styled and hers also cost $30.
I walked out of there today with product in my hair, and my hair still wet, not dried or styled. Stennie, you’ll have to tell me tomorrow if it looks at all different. Or better. Or good. Or nothing.
Am I complaining?
BTW, what’s the origin of “put paid to”? Have either of you heard of that phrase?
I’m having hair anxiety now…I have to drink more.
