The blank pages are included so that the left and right pages fall in their correct positions in the document. Has nothing to do with space for revisions, etc. (I think it’s pretty goofy to put the text on them, though.)
Miracle Whip for BLTs only.
No absolutes in my world, dammit!
Sorry for this, but:
From 284:
I concur on everyone’s love of SOAP and Benson on it.
There’s another HB fan who doesn’t like mascots?? I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned my mascot story…
Still waiting for Bet’s Tumblr…
The Japanese are huge into sports–baseball, soccer and even basketball. My guess is that they love the olympics because their country is in pretty rough shape these days–maybe sports is the only thing they can do well?
I totally get your pov on watching the olympics. I can see how it would be a breath of fresh, foreign air for us secluded Americans. Maybe I should have watched…
I’m hit and miss on “Little Children”. I enjoyed the documentary-style narration. However, I agree that the pedophile plotline was totally out of place. I also felt it was absurd to cast Kate Winslet in that part. There’s no irony in that guy cheating on his hot wife with another hot woman. It’s boring.
I now have Timeline as well. I hate it. I’m just glad when you look at your regular feed it’s not there, too.
Bet, Christian Bale is kind of an awesome guy. Last year, after wrapping a shoot on a film about China, he heard about Chen Guangcheng, a blind, self-taught lawyer activist who had been put under house arrest by the Chinese government. Bale tried to go visit the guy and got knocked around a bit by thugs that were guarding the house (they weren’t dressed like police or Chinese military). Bale brought cameras and by doing that was able to better publicize the plight of this activist who has since gained his freedom. Chen lives in Manhattan now. π I’m going around for tea later. π
I have to also say that I saw Bale in person, once, not in any showbiz setting–it was at Siskita’s graduation from UCLA. I just glanced to my right at the reception and there Bale was. I’m a pretty straight arrow but, suddenly my face felt warm and I swear I got a little short of breath. That is a handsome fellow! (Especially in person.)
So sorry to hear about Granny, Bet!! Something’s got to be done about that “gravity” thing! :/
From 285:
Congratulations on the MOVE, Sten!! Very exciting!! I wish you a smooth move!!
Are you sure the mascot-hater isn’t me, Sten? Though I would NOT cause physical harm to a mascot.
I think you’re mistaken about “Toy Story” being the first movie to feature “big name” actors. Siskita and I, a few weeks ago, watched this shitty animated dragon movie that “starred” Harry Morgan, John Ritter, James Earl Jones and a few other “names” from the 1970s. That movie didn’t need big stars but it had them. Then there was “The Rescuers” probably a little earlier which start Bob Newhart and Zsa Zsa Gabor (I think). I LOVED that movie as a kid. I think in 30 years “Ray Romano” will be about as famous as Harry Morgan was during his time on MASH (when this dragon movie was made).
Regarding the whole Beatles/Revolver and Queen/Beatles/Rolling Stones thing, I can only speak from my POV. I don’t care for Beatles or Rolling Stones because, I think their music feels to pop-rock to me. And the Beatles more experimental stuff sounds to hippie-ish for me. Meanwhile I adore Queen–I’m not entirely sure why, but I think it’s because their music and musical arrangements are simply more interesting to me on a technical level. I’m far from a music person, but I know the kind of music I love and Queen is a great example. I’ve also rediscovered my big fondness for ELO. That song “Twilight” is really pretty awesome.
From 286:
The smirky olympic girl was on your husband’s show, Sten. She was unimpressed. But I like that she’s having fun with it.
Kirk or Picard was the first argument I can remember Siskita and I ever having. I still think she’s wrong. The correct answer is Kirk. If you’re talking “who’s the better captain?” then it’s Picard. But if the question is just “Kirk or Picard?” I think “who would I rather serve with?” and that’s easy. I may end up dead, but I’m going to have a blast doing it.
Just my Β₯2!
I’m caught up! Let’s see how long that lasts…
Alright alright alright! It’s me! I’m the listener Stennie was referring to with the fear of mascots! I don’t know the source of it, I just know that I can be serenely walking down the street MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS and suddenly find myself inside a random store with no idea how I got there. Knee-jerk panicked reaction to seeing a mascot on the street. I’m terrified they’re going to try to hug me. I think Stennie was with me once when that happened.
This is the first of what is sure to be multiple comments.
1. Fuckoffs by Proxy! Parents who insist on using double – or even TRIPLE wide strollers. They take up the entire sidewalk, and delay every one and every THING when they try to get on the bus with them. Open. They do make strollers for two children that are not wide, but long. Aren’t they easier on everyone?
2. Friends who ask me to donate to their various charities although I am unemployed and they know it.
And that’s all the people who need to be fucked off today!
Now, I am also breaking some rules by commenting on a past show. I listened to this week and last week’s show today.
The Beatles
I love Revolver, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t believe it is their #1 effort. Here’s my top 5:
Help (US release)
Abbey Road
Revolver
Rubber Soul
A Hard Day’s Night
Bubbling under: Side 1 of the White Album
CONGRATULATIONS STENNIE on moving to Bellingham! and keeping your job at your current salary! I’m now jealous of MarlaMarlaMarlaMarla
Karl Paloucek is a very good friend of mine. He probably doesn’t listen, but I have suggested it to him on more than one occasion. He’s an entertainment writer for a “major publication” and is a big movie and music geek. He’d like the HB.
I actually do have an answer to “This Page Intentionally Left Blank. ”
Books tend to be printed on huge sheets of paper, several pages at a time. If there is an odd number of pages, one of the pages on the big sheet is blank (like at the end of a chapter) it gets a “This Page Intentionally Left Bank” on it, so that the reader doesn’t think it is a mistake.
For digitally printed materials, blank pages are often inserted to keep chapters from starting on an odd-numbered page, so that the front and back of single pages can be printed simultaneously.
Why insurance cards would come that way is a mystery to me, too.
Hello – Hello! I’ve redone some technology in my life and have figured out how to listen to the podcasts easier (phone/car). Catching up first with the Olympics mini show. So comforting to listen in and feel like you guys are hanging out on my back porch. You know Denver, CO would be a great almost half way point between – feel free to meet on my back porch one day!
Good luck with the move Stennie. I hope Buster and you have many more healthy days together than you expect. Quick second to the ‘you rule’ to Guatamala – wasn’t that Grand!
Have to side with Leonard of Big Bang – Picard over Kirk but original Star Trek over Enterprise. Just too fun to watch.
Not that you asked – but favorite company mascots: M&M characters, Mickey Mouse, Coca-Cola Pandas
Stennie – I’m sooo happy that you got the approval to move!!! I sure am going to miss you *tear*, but I know you’ll be much happier up there. I hope to come visit someday. They have beignets up there, right?
Even though I am adopted, I inherited from my mom (sorry, I’m still behind on episodes) the idea that I should save things for later “when I might need them.” My mom STILL has the comforter stored away that I used when I was a teenager. That just adds to clutter. Also, not making waves which leads to people walking all over you in life. I’m trying really hard to rectify that as an adult.
From my dad, stubborness. (He was in the Marine Corps.) And the older I get, I’m starting to see reason in his parenting skills of experience vs. talking “at” kids to teach them something. If you tell a kid no, they’ll want to do it more. If you let the kid do it and it turns out badly, they’ll never do it again. Obviously, not to the point if the child can get hurt, but enough to let them experience something for themselves. My mom wanted to protect us from everything. My dad was a smoker until I was about 4 and when I was 6, I wanted to try one of my aunt’s cigarettes (she was a chain smoker.) My mom automatically said “No.” My dad said, “No no…let her try it.” Of course I didn’t know you’re supposed to blow the smoke out. Made me sick to my stomach. Sure as shit, I never wanted to smoke after that.
From my sister, hating loud music. We used to get into fights over how loud the car stereo was blaring. I, unfortunately, have sensitive ears, so any loudness is a problem. She was into The Doors. You do the math. I still cringe at loud music, hence why I usually have ear plugs in at the gym or at a concert. If I don’t, my eardrums actually ache and the only thing I hear afterward is a loud hiss in my ears, like radio static. How is that fun?
Re: Beatles Albums. I’m partial to the White Album, warts and all, although beyond Revoltion 9, I’m hesitant to name an ACTUAL full-blown stinker. Even Revolution 9 is meant to be more of a sound experiment than a song. It’s also feels like the Beatles most snarky and raw album with your Bungalow Bills, your Sexy Sadies, your Warm Guns, your Doing It in the Roads.
I’ve always have a slight issue with Abbey Road. It’s mostly great, and while I love the ambition of Abbey Road’s Side 2, there’s a reason that whole thing is strung together, because they’re not actual fully-formed songs. Essentially, the Beatles created the rock medley here, but to me, that might have a negative connotation too. But who can argue with the rest of the album. “Because” melts me and “Here Comes the Sun” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Personally, I’d go 1. White Album, 2. Sgt. Pepper and 3. Abbey Road/Revolver depending on my mood.

Re: World Series of Little League – I’ve gained new perspective on this, and enjoyed it this year simply because my son’s playing, and I can appreciate the talent much more as well.

Selective This or That:
-Toe Stub over Charley Horse. I’ve not aware that I’ve ever had a Charley Horse, but my wife gets em sometimes when she sleeps, and they look awfully painful. I’ve stubbed my toe so badly that I’ve gone into shock, but those are pretty rare.
-King of America over Blood & Chocolate, but it’s a squeaker.
-Pancakes over waffles. Sorry, ladies, but I’ve never owned a waffle iron, so that usually means they’re frozen, and pancakes usually means somebody’s actually spent the time to cook them.
-Mayo over Miracle Whip. Natch.
-In-Laws over Catch-22. Mostly because M*A*S*H does the madness of war with a lighter touch, and because Catch-22 can’t live up to the novel. Plus the Serpentine.
-Loretta over Tammy. Saw Loretta live, and she’s a frickin’ legend.
-Robin Williams over Jim Carrey. I will defend The World According to Garp trumps over anything Carrey does. Even though they’re both annoying, I’ve got a better chance of laughing at Robin.
-Angry Birds over Tetris. I can drop Tetris in a second. I never understood the obsession.
-Cupcake over cookie. You guys are nuts. It’s CAKE.
-Pulp Fiction over Basterds. Just read Samuel L. Jackson’s wallet.
-Nutella over marshmallow fluff, based on which one I feel guiltier eating.
Looking forward to the Beatles list. I am a fan that normally likes everything by bands I like. I remember having the Blue and Red (red vinyl) “albums” as a kid, they came with the lyrics and we would play them for hours on the turntable. slowly adding other albums and cassettes as time went on. When they were finally released on CD in 1987 I got them as they came out. The thing that made them different is that they were released as the UK versions, track orders were different and I had never heard the song Doctor Robert. And an earworm that is stuck in my head right now is “Your Mother Should Know” from Magical Mystery Tour.
Based on some of the comments, I’m sorry I haven’t finished the episode. Nonetheless, mayo over Miracle Whip always.
Congrats on the plans to move, Stennie — kudos to your bosses! Does this mean you will totally work from home? That would be an interesting transition if I had to do it.
Just wanted to say hello and make sure the number of comments didn’t stay on 13!
Michelle is right – I worked in an architectural firm, and their specs had “This Page Intentionally Left Blank” so that when the specs were printed and bound, the odd page of the next chapter would be the first one you’d see on the righthand side, not the left. All specs had to be even paged, depending on how they wanted to bind them.
-Toe Stub/Charley Horse. Ugh I hate charlie horses, they always make me feel like I’m never going to walk again. I’d take a toe stub over that.
-King of America/Blood & Chocolate. I don’t know what either of them is.
-Pancakes/waffles. I love waffles.
-Mayo/Miracle Whip. I don’t have mayo on anything, save tuna fish sandwiches, and I’ve never had Miracle Whip. Can I not choose any?
-In-Laws/Catch-22. Don’t know ’em
-Loretta/Tammy. Huh?
-Robin Williams/Jim Carrey. Really tough. I went through my Jim Carrey phase when I was growing up, but I know Robin Williams to be the much better/watchable/reliable actor. I’ll go for Robin.
-Angry Birds /Tetris. TETRISSSSSS!
-Cupcake/cookie. I’m a cookie gal.
-Pulp Fiction/Basterds. Haven’t seen Inglorious, so Pulp Fiction. But I didn’t love that movie anyway…
-Nutella/marshmallow fluff. Nutella – haven’t had marshmallow fluff.
Setting the DVR for an early AM Swansea match on ESPN2. Because I have a soft spot for the underdog. #Cubsfan
@Patrick: LIGHTWEIGHT. I’m getting up at 4:30am to watch it live! (What am I still doing up in that case?) Go underdogs!
