I believe “Olympic Special” should have been called “The Quickie”. I have so thoroughly enjoyed all of Bet’s Olympic updates, especially Frozen Pea Gold… which I almost did when I first saw it. My You Rule is for you guys. Thank you for your dedication to friendship, brilliant conversation, and for keeping my feeble human interactions of late a little more inspired than usual. I plan on listening tomorrow during “Olympic Sweat Your Ass Off” in the morning at 8 am when it’s 102°. Gratefully, it will not be televised lest I look like the “Isle of Man with Pavement,” as I usually nearly bust my ass on pea gravel on every tool around the ‘hood. Motto for this week, “We’re so far out in the sticks, even the damned rain can’t find us.”
Hi! I love you!
I LOVE “Distant Sun!” It’s by far my most favorite Crowded House song. Interestingly, I’d never heard it until Stennie and Lily used it on CD Mix 5, but it’s been in heavy rotation ever since.
So, I have a couple thoughts on the Olympics. First, an Olympic “What’s Up With That?!” What’s up with all the sulking over silver; i.e., athletes who are visibly and unabashedly disappointed or even disgusted at having to settle for silver or bronze?
In particular, I’m thinking of the Russian women’s gymnastics team during the all-around (who got the silver but looked like they were finishing dead last) and the British men’s eight crew, which got the bronze behind Canada and Germany. Maybe I lack the kind of all-or-nothing attitude it takes to be a champion, but I think it’s bad sportsmanship and it makes you look like a spoiled brat.
My Olympic You Rule! is for Japanese swimmer Ken Takakuwa, who finished 6th (out of 8) in the men’s 200 IM final (in which Michael Phelps famously “avenged” his loss to Ryan Locte from the 400 IM). Why a You Rule! for 6th? What am I, championing mediocrity now? No, it’s because when his name was announced, Takakuwa stepped onto that pool deck like it was holy ground. He gave a discreet but sincere bow to the crowd, then bowed to the timers when he got to his starting blocks. It was really refreshing to see, and a much more memorable moment for me than watching Phelps rack up his 20th Olympic medal. Impressive, sure, but where’s the reverence?
I’m okay with “medal” as a verb, but you know what word drives me crazy? Helmer. As in, Ridley Scott’s early days as a helmer. Are we *that* hard-up for synonyms for “director” or “filmmaker”? I’m ok with helm as a verb, if used sparingly , but helmer makes me want to chew on tinfoil.
Happy Friday!!! (I know, lame, but I don’t want to be late to rehearsal….)
Greetings! I’ve been a bad hucklebugger for a while — I’m really behind. Just wanted to pop in and say hi! I watched a lot of Olympics the first week, but totally checked out on week two. Been trying to catch up on Doctor Who episodes for the start of the next season in a few weeks, which looks fabulous, if you like Who. The preview clip said it best — “Dinosaurs. On a spaceship!” said in a tone of wonderment and giddiness. I will admit to have gotten Nicholas a bit hooked. Not sure if letting him watch Cybermen kill people makes me the mother of the year, but at least I’m not rotting his brain with Barney.
How bout an f-off by proxy?
Hand, foot & mouth disease can suck a dick.
Also, about the only Olympic updates I’m following are Hucklebug ones. Kudos.
Do I know Crowded House?! What a question! I should be insulted, but alas, I am not.
Old Squeeze: When I saw them last month, they did Bang Bang. How’s that for old?
Squeeze mailing list – you know I run that, right?
Hey Kelly – I’m a batton twirler too! I never won any awards or tried out for any musicals, but I had my day in the sun.
I hope you aren’t thinking of me when talking about a listener who is afraid of mascotts. Because my big fear is clowns.
I still can’t believe that the world’s handsomest kitty has cancer. He’s such a wonderful boy, and I hope the rest of his time with you is frolicky, fun, and filled with turkey. Thank you for reminding me to love Punim more. All he wants is my time, and I’m too selfish with it.
Heidi – This is also the first time I’ve heard “medal” as a verb. It is stupid.
I was going to comment on my favorite songs by the artists you mentioned, but this is getting lengthy, and you will be recording soon.
Have fun!
