Maggie Smith Trivia answer: California Suite

Bet: Awesome shout out. I’m blushing like bashful from Snow White.

  2. Michelle says:

Awww, thank you for the mention. I do miss Punim a whole lot. He’s at boot camp for a total of 2 weeks (!) but I get to see him for an hour this Thursday and Friday – for one hour at a time. I need to get MY training. I think he comes home this weekend.

Ok, so Mr. Middlebrow says “No Spoilers.” Fine. So when do I get to hear the reason for Bet’s hinkiness over the Artist?

  3. Michelle says:

Earworm – sorry Heidi, you didn’t invent it. I think we got it from German. The word is Ohrwurm.

  4. Michelle says:

    Um… well… I don’t know who Maggie Smith is …

  5. Michelle says:

Tom Hanks – the last movie I saw where I liked him was Toy Story 3. That’s not that long ago.

Spoilers discussion board – I’d take part in that.

About Bet’s movie with a doggie – Hachi – I believe I’ve seen the Japanese movie. No spoiler, but the dog is a Shiba Inu.

  6. Michelle says:

I feel like I should comment about Chicago because you gave it a mention. But I have nothing to say about the Cubs. If I cared about baseball, I’d be a Mets fan, because it is how my parents raised me. But really, I don’t give a shit about them either.

  7. michelle says:

Punim can certainly help you out with the biting, Bet. He’s not a slobberer, but after a romp at the doggie park, I have to give him a sponge bath. He’s full of other dogs’ slobber. What Punim does do, however, is to share his water. He has slight jowls, see, and after he drinks, water pours out of them. He likes to come and let that excess water drip on me, usually on my feet.

  8. michelle says:

Ok – a Fuck Off by Proxy please for AT&T. They are my phone company and internet provider. This doesn’t seem to be enough for them. Without my prompting, they keep notifying me that my order to bump up my intranet speed has been processed and that I can now expect a higher bill.

I ordered no such bump in internet speed. When I call to complain, it takes me more than an hour to get my point across, the promise to fix it is made, and then three days later they call to thank me for choosing to up my service.

I reported them to the FCC last night. Let’s see what happens.

  9. michelle says:

Also, fuck off Barbara Bush. She left me a voicemail to remind me to go vote for Romney. I don’t want her voice on my machine, and I’d sooner vomit nails than vote for Romney. I’m just sayin’

  10. LilyG says:

Just wanted to say hi. In the next few weeks I shall become the proud owner of one new iPad, so I should be able to get caught up and have access to my computer stuff during times when Boy is awake, and assuming they have a chat app, I should be able to catch you all in chat.

They remade a movie about Hachiko set in the US?? That makes no sense. That’s like setting the story of Jesus in New Jersey.  Hachiko was a real dog with a statue dedicated to him on the spot where he did the thing he is noted for (no spoilers) and that location is now where thousands and thousands of people use as a meeting place–which is perfectly appropriate once you know the full story of Hachiko.  It’s on my bucket list to wait for someone at the Hachiko statue in Tokyo.

Yeah, Tom Hanks is fine–but you guys used the word “love” so I had to say something.

As for Jeff Bridges in the “True Grit” remake, it was Siskita who put the idea in my head that he wasn’t quite disappearing into the role. I was fine with him until she pointed out her own dissatisfaction with him. She did the same thing to me in “Titanic” though that movie was, in fact, pretty bad even though I hadn’t noticed it right away.

The music from “Vertigo” that was used in “The Artist” knocked me clean out of the movie because I love Bernard Herrmann’s music.  I wasn’t sure it was exactly the same because I haven’t listened to it in ages but I recognized the melody immediately. I’d say where it was but I don’t want to include a spoiler.

I think Si and I both enjoyed the first “OSS 117” movie but it did get a little boring for me about halfway through.  I think if you’re going to parody spy movies you should go a lot further than that. I’m thinking of the new TV show out of Australia called “Danger 5”. They have some short webisodes on YouTube but they have a full series running in Australia that is pretty damn fun.

Really enjoyed the “too stupid to live” tv character thing. I wouldn’t know where to start on that. Perhaps you could expand it to movie characters next time? Or talk about shows you used to watch but stopped for some reason, like that one Stennie mentioned “The Office” I think it was. I recently gave up on a really fun show from the UK called “Peep Show” because the lead characters just became so unlikeable.

Great show, ladies! I also enjoyed the last few weeks’ worth, but was too late to comment. Bet, I agree completely about Hachi. My Japanese sweetheart bought it and made me watch it, although I resisted for all the reasons you mentioned. However, it’s such a great story — amazingly true! — that even a remake with Richard Gere couldn’t muck it up. Stennie, I’ve got the Bluray if you want to borrow it. Bet, you are so right about Courtney Love – fuck her! “Teen Spirit” was the one of the best performances in the Muppet Movie. The vocal arrangement was brilliant. And like thepete, I was completely struck when the Vertigo score appeared in The Artist. I recognized it immediately: the cue was ‘Scene d’amour’ near the end of Vertigo and it fit perfectly near the end of The Artist as well, and since The Artist is silent, the music really stands out throughout the picture. It surprised me that they were still eligible for an Oscar for Best Score, but it well deserved recognition. [Although, with apologies to Stennie, John Williams wrote TWO nominated scores last year at the age of 80, and they were probably some of his best work.] The entire film is just a delight and I think a spoiler message board would be fun for those of us who are dying to discuss it!

  13. Donna & Janet says:

We have a movie recommendation for Amazing Race fans or specifically, Phil K fans. It’s actually a documentary called “The Ride.” It might help to like cycling, which we do, but it might just be enough to like Phil and Phil’s Dad (if you remember the arrival scene in The Amazing Race episode ending in New Zealand).
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMeqF5VxHaY is the trailer

  14. Donna says:

Just to weigh in on The Artist spoiler discussion…..discuss away. I remember when it first came out Janet mentioned wanting to see it and I thought otherwise. We never saw it and when it won so many honors, I mentioned to Janet that we might should go see it and alas, neither one of us wants to now. So, we don’t care.

  15. I just wrote a long message which my newannoyingit’supposedtobebetterandeasierbutit’snotcomputeriamnotinlovewith ate….

    so here’s all you get.

    hi.

    love you

    marla

  16. Regarding Buster (Bluth, not Stennie’s cat):

I think what most distinguishes Buster from other TSTL characters is that his stupidity is organic, authentic, and central to his character. He doesn’t start out sort of dim and get progressively dumber; he’s basically helpless and fatally inept from the moment we first meet him: right after being told that he took a presumably very expensive course in cartography, he mistakes the “blue area” on a map for land. It’s also a key component of his relationship with Lucille (as well as Lucille II and the loose seal).

Also, I don’t know if it rises to RIP-worthiness, but did you know that Robert Sherman (brother of Richard and co-creator of some of the best (or at least my favorite) film songs) passed away earlier this month?
