Thanks for the plugs, ladies! Sorry, Sten, didn’t remember the earlier plug for thepete.mag. Working on the new issue today. Hopefully, it’ll be available by the time you record the next HB.
Is it me or are the Republicans and, quite a few Christians, off the deep end? I mean, Girl Scouts are a front for Planned Parenthood??? Aren’t they like the Boy Scouts aka anti-gay and Christianish? Not that I’d let either factor stop me from buying thin mints. Those cookies are like crack.
Santorum and pals also think that Obama is going to go after Christianity the first morning of his 2nd term. Who is so disconnected from reality to believe this?
OK that’s it for now, but I’m still 20 minutes short of the end of this week’s HB, so I may be back…
Bet, I say “glove compartment” too.
I can’t believe anyone would think the Girl Scouts are a tool of Planned Parenthood (though if they were that would rock.) I was a Brownie when I was a little kid, and I hated it. I hated it so much that I used to “forget” to get off the bus at the Den Mother’s house on Wednesdays and go home instead. The reason why? I was afraid they were going to make me pray. Apparently, I was a BORN atheist, and I used to be terrified of being forced to pray. And something about the Girl Scouts smacked of church to me.
Irrelevant aside: if the Catholics turn out to be right, I’m going to the deepest pit in hell. When I was in Sunday school, the priest had us each do our first confession (apparently without telling our parents they were going to do this, or prepping us on what it was all about, either). He asked if I’d been good, and I said yes. He asked if I had any sins to confess and I said no. He asked if I’d been getting along with my brothers, and I said yes. So he said ok and that was that. But my parents found out later that they’d hauled us into confession without telling them, and they were upset about it. I told them “It’s ok, Mom and Dad. I didn’t tell him ANYTHING.”
Maybe that stupid senator really LOVES Girl Scout Cookies, and this was his ploy to get people to send them to him?
It’s pronounced wieldstone as opposed to willedstn which is then confused with Willesden which is also in North London. It used to be a company town, the company being Kodak, my dad worked there for 42 years and they were very good to their employees, I have fond memories of the children’s Christmas parties. Mum is still getting her pension, for now, the factory a mere shell and the theatre and social club long gone.
Speaking of Christmas when we were in Chicago we ate at the Walnut room in Macy’s where they featured several special seasonal alcoholic beverages and a souvenir glass. I chose a coffee drink with peppermint, also available with hot chocolate. Big mistake it tasted like coffee and toothpaste.
My sister had to read To Kill a Mockingbird for school and was not enjoying it, I borrowed her copy and fell in love despite cultural references which I totally did not understand. Busting up a chifferobe comes to mind, in england you ‘bust up a fight’ so I thought what is a chifferobe and who is he fighting? I was probably 15 or so and have read it many times since.
I have not read “To Kill a Mockingbird” either — Bet, do you think it was a banned book for us? Janet made me watch the movie years ago. We have reserved “Hey Boo” at the library and when we’re there, I will also check out the book and make myself read it.
I say “glove compartment” and I always keep the window stickers listing the price and the features.
Stennie, thanks for the Hucklebug kazees. We got them today — the perfect birthday gift!
And lastly, I saw this great personalized license plate today: CRP IM L8. So, I hope I’m not too late with my comments!
Hey gals,
Loved the discussion about ‘…Mockingbird’ — I’m sure I read it and saw the movie in jr high and loved it but your conversation made me realize how many details I’ve forgotten, so maybe I’ll read it again this year and start with the ‘Hey Boo” doc y’all recommended!
Bet, I saw the Obama blues concert from the White House on PBS Monday (I still love PBS!) and it was quite entertaining but featured an unusual mix of performers ranging from Buddy Guy to Mick Jagger. Obama’s brief performance at the end was the highlight. He’s good and he really looks like he wants to sing! π
I also call it the glove compartment as I thought glove box was British.
Finally, thanks for the shout-out last week and thanks especially for the You Rule. Stennie, you made my day! See you Memorial Day? (^_^) Bet, if you get Rock Band we can all play online together.
