Nope, not moved yet, but I’ve been busy doing stuff at the new house. The sitting on the ass part took place between about 10 pm and 2 am. The internet thing was so frustrating because there was no reason for them to turn it off this week. But it’s back, and I’m ready to listen. Happy New Year, all!
I have no movies to offer, as I don’t think I saw any new ones. I have to go back and listen to find out why you hate Happy Feet — not my favorite, and it’s full of enviro-friendly anvils falling on the audience, but it’s cute enough and the Boy likes it.
Will finish listening later — Boy is returning in about an hour, and I want a nap.
Ugh–my timing’s been lousy. I keep trying to leave comments just after you guys record :\ Hopefully I’ll get my shoutout this week!
Comments from 256: I’m hit-and-miss with Soderberg. I’m not sure what movies of his use the funky editing style, aside from “Schizopolis” which I loooove. Normally, I’m with you on the “clever” editing stuff–it totally knocks me out of the movie. But in the case of “Schizopolis,” he’s kind of making/having fun with cinematic tropes. I enjoyed the atmosphere and acting of “The Limey” but ultimately, the story fell a little flat for me.
I read that the Salvation Army isn’t really a charity OR an army. π Joking aside, I recently read that they are a very Christian group that doesn’t support gay rights, etc. I need to research this more, but that’s what I read–have you guys heard anything along these lines?
From 257: Bet, your comment was the nudge that got us to put Jay and Kay in front of the camera again. We were soooo close for a while now and I even shot something with Jay sending a holiday message to Bill O’Reilly (here: http://goo.gl/fB6RL ). So, they’re back! (Of course, it helps that shooting/editing/uploading on the iPad is soooo super easy. I’m embarrassed at how much I love that thing–and that’s saying a lot.)
My favorite movies from this year are numerous. I saw a lot of films, in part, because I’ve been going to the Japan Society screenings a lot. But rather than blather on and on, I’ll just mention “Sword of Desperation” which is available now on DVD at http://animeigo.com for $20 and will be on Amazon and elsewhere in mid-Feb. It’s a samurai movie that is really good. I’ve mentioned it before in comments, so I’ll just say that if you dig samurai movies, this one is pretty solid.
In fact, I’m expecting a “Sword of Desperation” DVD to appear in my mailbox any day now…
Here’s my “What’s Up With That” for 2011: the Republicans. Can they pick a batch of collectively less likable candidates? WTF! It’s like 2004 with the Democrats. >_< That and when people panic, like any of them could beat Obama. Obama may be a disappointment, but he looks like Jesus next to any of those crazy Republicans.
My personal highlight for 2011 was making friends with a native-Japanese speaker who happens to be a super nice person who puts up with my endless, stupid Japanese language questions. Since I started hanging out with her, I've become much more comfortable with speaking Japanese, though I still sound like a caveman, I think. I've also exchanged emails with her entirely in Japanese–and they're not just "hi, how are you? I am good." emails. My non-personal highlight is seeing Marquee Five put out their first CD. That's pretty awesome though I feel compelled to mention that the name of the CD came from my brain.
Oh and I did thoroughly enjoy "The Apple" and I'm glad you guys had such a good time, too. I'm game when you want to do another.
I say "it is what it is" all the time. What else should I say when I'm resigned to the true suckiness of life? That's always when I use it. Anything else seems too depressing when faced with something like a politician you once believed in who has dramatically let you down or a cat with kidney disease. It's annoying when it's a copout but then, life is annoying like that sometimes.
Bet: agreed about "baby bump". I HAYTE it like you hate "Green Acres" and have for years.
I've always hated the phrase "I could care less." I hate it because it's simply inaccurate. Have a look at this video from British comedian David Mitchell who captures my opinion fully: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om7O0MFkmpw (In short, it's "I couldn't care less.") I don't agree with that last bit. "Holding down the fort" is a metaphor–I mean, who happens to be really holding down a fort when they say that?
OK, I'm caught up! Now it's time for me to shut up!
