Thanks for your mention of a Bad Thing and your condolences in the loss of my father-in-law. I did make a very quick trip to London for his funeral and I could make one of those Visa commercials……..you know the ones, the price of the airline ticket $$$, taking two days off of work $$, boarding the dogs $$, attending the funeral, priceless. Even though it meant putting my own father’s birthday dinner on the back burner and not seeing Bet and meeting Milo, it was worth it. We did not, however, sing “Jerusalem” in the service but did sing the Boy Scout Hymn (who knew?) and a grandson, dressed in fatigues because his dress uniform and bugle had already been shipped, played Last Post on a borrowed bugle before heading back to the Base to fly to Kenya with his army unit. And unbeknownst to me, Last Post is not the same as Taps. By the way Bet, it may work out for Janet to come with me when we reschedule Dad’s birthday dinner so you two will finally meet and Milo will be smothered with attention.
Keep up the good work, Bet and Stennie. I know so little about music, television and movies compared to you two and so I would never be a contributing member on those topics. However, I love the regular features. You do make me laugh!
First off, sorry for Donna and her loved ones for their loss.
You nailed a bunch of my best songs for artists (Life During Wartime, Not Fade Away) but I’d be hard-pressed to remember a single Osmonds or Carole King song. I’m thinking “Billie Jean” is still my favorite Michael Jackson song, because it was probably one of the first ones I remember, thanks to MTV.
When is THE APPLE? And then, when will be THE ROOM?
Just saw something on the way to lunch and thought you two would love it……….. I eat my lunch and use the computers in a small library on the second floor of the medical students’ Student Center at VCU. I have to walk through a snack bar area where the TV is usually on CNN so I generally glance up at the screen to see what’s on. This is what i saw: “United States interviewing Bin Laden’s wives. Women bitter toward Americans.” Now there’s some shocking headline news!
Our cat, Zaphod, has this little “eckeckeckeck” noise he makes whenever there is heated tension or bad moods in the room – he slinks around and makes this noise whenever Pete & I have couples arguments or even have a heated discussion about The War in Iraq or whether or not the latest Dr. Who episode should have been re-written. For that, we call him a very “empathetic,” or really a “pathetic,” cat…but he always knows when to come up and snuggle with us, that’s true.
Sorry to hear about your loss, Donna! π
Please do The Apple on a date I can attend – like May 20th or the 22nd!!! We can then either party the night before Judgement Day, or party and scream “HA! You were wrong, religious a-holes!!!” the day after π
-Sierra/Siskita
After a couple of days eating peanut butter I felt like Mickey Rooney in The Atomic Kid. Power has been back a week now and I’m just getting my fridge restocked.
Wall-E and Eva were inspired choices for movie couples. How about Kermit and Miss Piggy? Another unforgetable couple.
Scout is such a good kitty. Cats sense your mental state better than any animal I know. She did her best to comfort you.
Oh, that dream of yours was incredible Stennie. Why not have a contest?
“What did Stennie’s dream mean?”
You two can pick the best answer.
Sten, I think your disturbing dream means you hate dealing with clogged toilets.
I only said I thought the Twain quote came from Darrow because I’d seen someone else claim it was Darrow. I then quickly added that I it was either Darrow or Yoda. I then felt like it’s silly for people to trust everything they read on Twitter as being accurate/correctly attributed so I began incorrectly attributing all sorts of quotes to MLK, like “Do or do not, there is no try.” and “This was no boating accident!” Well, I enjoyed it π
Sten, you make a very good point about how quickly the conversation changed after the incorrect attribution thing came to light. I’m sad to admit that I helped keep the conversation changed with my stupid little stunts. AH well…
Sten, did you hear that Johnny Depp is remaking “The Thin Man”?
So, I’m jumping on the bandwagon: when are we going to do “The Apple”? I think it would be a fun way to celebrate Judgment Day. You guys are aware of http://wecanknow.com right? That’s what Siskita was referring to in her comment.
In closing, I’d just like to add my condolences to the pile for Donna–so sorry for the loss π I’d also like to say that I’m totally with Donna in that Bet and Stennie always make me laugh. Keep up the great work, ladies!!
So behind on listening, so I”m not sure what was said this week. From the comments, it seems like you’re settling on the Apple. Have fun with that. Not sure I could do that again, and it’s been at least 25 years. But some good news around here — it looked like there was going to be some Nick (not the Boy) around in people near and dear and it’s buggered off for a bit. Eff off Nick!
Much as I love “Stay Up Late” (as the father of two boys, how could I not with lyrics like “little pee-pee, little toes”?) I have to say “And She Was” is my favorite Talking Heads song.
“Crazy for You” was featured in Vision Quest, which starred Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino. My favorite Madonna song is probably “Borderline,” though “Cherish” and “True Blue” are two earworms I don’t mind being infected with–provided there’s no one around to witness my secret shame.
For Bowie, I’m a fan of the Thin White Duke era, especially “Modern Love.” (It’s possible I have an irrational affinity for anything ’80s. I heard on the radio today that Huey Lewis and the News are touring again; I got a bit too excited about that.)
As to movie couples, there is no topping Nick & Nora Charles. But a few more worth consideration:
I’m sure if Mike were still listening/commenting, he’d mention Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) and Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) from THE LADY EVE.
I always loved Irene Dunne and Cary Grant as Lucy and Jerry Warriner in THE AWFUL TRUTH. Plus, you get the added bonus of Ralph Bellamy as the third wheel.
As for more modern fare (and because I’ll use any excuse to pimp this movie any chance I get) George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez had some pretty incendiary chemistry as bank robber Jack Foley and U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco in OUT OF SIGHT.
I love and appreciate my song and I’m still listening! I’m usually too far behind to comment, but I’m almost caught up. I’m about half way through this podcast, but not to the topic yet so nothing interesting to contribute in this comment- except for dream analysis but I’ll keep that to myself. Just wanted to let you know I’m lurking. Love you guys!
