I agree that we should not bully anyone Bet.. I made an “it Gets Better” poster for the event we had last weekend, and was very careful that it was non-specific about “miserable middle school and horrible high school experiences” for youth in the community. I was harassed too..just because I was different, I wore glasses, braces, had an east coast accent in California, I was Jewish in a predominantly Christian school, I didn’t have straight blonde hair….(i’m good with that now) but then, I just wanted to be like everyone else…..
Zoe has gotten bullied for her OCD and her weight, and the most hurtful of it from family. It’s horrible…the unspoken epidemic. “But we are just trying to help…” BS, and shut up. It’s not helping. (you saw the story about Ken’s aunt’s comment on day 1 of Zoe’s visit. Ugh.
    Enough.

I don’t think there is anything out there in the universe that makes me feel more inadequate than Mike’s quizzes. Thanks.

I think the first movie I saw in a movie theater was Fantasia, and I remember it scared the bejeebers out of me. But I was probably around two or three. I think the first “real” movie I saw was some Pink Panther movie. For some reason, my parents always took me to those — they considered them kid movies. But, for Bet, The In-Laws, was also up there.

I worry about NTCNTC becoming a bully. How do you ensure that your kid isn’t the big kid beating the other one up for lunch money? Unfortunately, when watching a bunch of two year olds interact, bullying is the natural state of things. You’re convinced when you’re watching them that they’re all thugs in training. And the teachers won’t tell you. The problem with the real verbal bullies is that they’re usually sneaky and smart enough not to do it in front of parents.

  3. The first movie I remember seeing was, I think, Pinocchio, at a drive-in (Hey, Sal!); first movie in an actual (sorry, Sal!) indoor movie house . . . that’s a tough one. According to my mom, it was The Jungle Book. (My folks used to refer to seeing a movie as “going to the show.”) The first I can recall would be something kind of pathetic like Francis the Talking Mule or The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

I suspect the emphasis on “the gay” in the current anti-bullying effort is motivated primarily by the recent spate of suicides by gay kids who’ve been bullied. I don’t think anyone is suggesting that LGBT kids are any more deserving of protection than those who are fat, skinny, rock-climbing, or covered in itchy red spots. It seems to be less of a “don’t bully gay kids” message and more of a “don’t kill yourself over it” message. One key difference here is that that things like the Defense of Marriage Act, Prop 8, and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and their ilk operate as forms of institutional bullying, tacitly approved by the government.

After consulting with some professionals, I’ve determined that Bet’s lyrics quiz was a little too difficult for this exhibition (it’s not a competition). So Bet, here’s a make-up quiz for you.

    Top 40 songs of 1974
    ====
    1
The drinking I did on my last big gig
It made my voice go low
They said that they liked the young sound
    When they let me go

    2
And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
    Smiled reassuringly

    3
    So I said to myself
I said “Self, do you see what is sailin’ through my soul?”
And I gotta have some more, don’t you know

    4
I never felt it in my feet
I never felt it in my soul
But I heard it in the alley
Now it’s in my rock and roll

    5
Would it be enough for your cheating heart
If I broke down and cried, if I cried

    6
When I get lonely and I’m sure I’ve had enough
She sends her comfort coming in from above

    7
I said, “Who we love and why we love, it’s hard to understand
Let’s just sit here on the couch and face this man to man”

    8
    Walkin’ on a waves chicane
Staring as she called my name

    9
    Precious love,
You held my life within your hands
    Created everything I am
taught me how to live again

    10
She dealt two cards, a two and a three
And mumbled some words that were so strange to me

Fast comment cause I’m running out the door for TWO birthday parties tonight! Yikes!

First movie I can recall seeing in the theater was Space Camp. To this day, it’s still my favorite movie of all time (but that’s because I wanted to be an astronaut.) My parents took me to the theater and the film broke. So, we got a refund and had to come back a second time to see it. I think I’m probably one of the few people on the planet that actually owns the DVD.

I was picked on as a kid because I was short. It didn’t happen very often, but when it did, it was horrible. When I was in middle school, one of the upper class kids actually picked me up off the ground BY MY HEAD. Put his two greasy hands on either side of my face and lifted me off the ground using my head and just let me dangle there and laughed at me. To this day, I’m very grateful that he didn’t screw up my neck or spine. You could hear my neck crunch when he lifted me. Awful.

Yeah, sorry, I didn’t get that the list was about both favorite and good movies. I have different lists for each because I’m OCD. 🙂

I’m with you on “Time After Time” Bet–it’s good stuff. We saw McDowell do a Q&A at the Egyptian once where they ran that movie and then had a special video message from Mary Steenburgen–his ex-wife, whom he met on that set. 🙂

Bet, I just dug up one of the commercials you mentioned, specifically, it’s the one with Rahall sending jobs to China:

Yeah, because no Republican ever supported a company outsourcing to Asia before. >___<

    I'm catching up!
